[IMG] All the games I want to play are in Japanese, and even if I import them, they're still going to be in Japanese, which is why I have decided that I am going to..../drumroll LEARN JAPANESE!! /end drumroll :p

Anyway, I was wondering if someone could guide me in this newest undertaking of mine! Any websites/books that would be of use would be appreciated. :D

Learn japanese, huh? I sure hope you have some natural born linguistical talents... Even if you have; its gonna be quite the challange.
One tip though, either you focus on reading (not writing[its not like when we write, every symbol has to be made with absolute perfection]) or you focus on speaking. I have a book about japanese culture and writing, and they have diffrent types of symbols for lots of things, for example when they draw comics. By the time a stundent finishes school, they are qualified to read a newspaper...

I suggest you play the games without understanding anyting...

    Try this: http://www.jref.com/language/

Japanese is a great language. I decided to learn to speak it about a week ago, but I haven't got very far, because I'm lazy.

Most important word you'll ever need is "kampai", just keep that in mind and you'll be fine. :D

    Thanks everyone. :D

Well, to be more specific, I wanted to learn how to read text, and understand it...which probably means I have to learn kanji. Though I have no idea what the difference is between kanji and katakana and japanese, etc etc.

Is there any place where I can learn how to read kanji? I can't seem to find any...

@ Pac Man: And what's kampai?

Don't forget 'baka'. It is the most used word when you are in Japan and don't understand what they mean. :D

I was going to take a Japanese class...twice...but both times the classes were full and they wouldn't let me in...so they stuck me in a spanish class with a crappy teacher. Needless to say I never went. :rolling:

I tried learning japanese back in high school. I got the knack of reading and remembering their symbols, till I was introduced to ANOTHER set of symbols. The bastards have two alphabets!

I never ahd the chance to take a Japanese class in high school. I probably wouldn't have taken it anyways, but it would have been nice to have the option. :D

Maybe I'll learn it one day...

Apparently at my (academically selective) high school you are not expected to have leaned all the Kanji even by graduation. BTW, one of my friends wants to learn it after people from our Japanese "Sister School" came over... so join the club Faraaz.

Two alphabets? They have three (four if you count romaji): Hiragana (what you'll learn first), Katakana (what they use for writing foreign words, mostly) and Kanji (not sure specifically what this is for, but it has truckloads of letters XD)

I know this because I'm going to be starting private tutoring of japanese... A friend of the family :) So yeah.

And, Yirimyah, I wanted to learn japanese way before that. :p

I took mandarin for 13 years. It's very difficult to learn languages with different alphabets let me tell you

Well...I already speak Urdu, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, German and English. SO that's 5 sets of alphabets right there...so I don't think the alphabet thing will be a problem.

@Yirimyah: Well...I just wanna learn enough to understand what the li'l people in the games are talking about... :D

So if I learn this hiragana and katakana, I can apparently be well on my way, and not bother with kanji...(according to a japanese friend of mine) so...Hiragana/Katakana, Here I COME!! ( Next semester, at any rate...)

Eh, Kanji is easy, especially if you grew up learning it.

Japanese is quite simple once you get the hang of it, the basic sentence structures are similar and there don't seem to be many synonyms. Learn Hiragana first, then work on Katakana.
