When you enter Deirex's Tower, you will be teleported to Jarlaxle.

If you wander around long enough (try sleeping), a drow wizard (standing a bit north of the tower you can't enter in the drow city) will try to sell you a piece of magic rope. That will start the Jarlaxle quest.

I was under the impression that you had to have recieved the quest from Matron Ardulace for Jarlaxle(sp?) to appear. Am I wrong?

Well partly true. It is only after a certain point in your quests for 'Mother' that the mage will appear.

[IMG] in my case, right after meeting the Matron Mother for the first time, a mage (name V****) approaches and start this quest.

So? I've read the drow trilogy, but what has that to do with the quest in BG2?
