So I'm wondering, what's the underlying basis for determining the Jester's song effectiveness? Enemies save vs spell to avoid being confused, but what exactly are they saving against?

I guess what I'm wondering is...did I mis-allocate ability points in getting 18 CHA when it doesn't help out the PC's chances of confusing enemies?

Their saving throw is what makes it effective. In V3 rules, you can help make these things more effective, but not with V2 D&D. Although, you can just keep retrying as often as you like.

You could have the bard cast greater malasion before he does his bard's song. That will reduce their saving throws.

Saves against the Jester's song are made at +4. This may seem a bit rubbish but it actually makes the class balanced. Enemies have to make their save every round and an invisible jester can sing away to his heart's content until all enemies have killed or nearly killed each other. The effectiveness of the song goes up with levels (by the end of SoA it stuns enemies who fail their saves) and it bypasses magic resistance. Greater Malison makes it very deadly indeed.

It also seems that the song is indeterminate of levels - being an innate, it doesn't function like a spell.

Yes, I'm quite fond of the invisible jester strategy. That, in conjunction with an unseen Viconia turning undead, made the lower tombs in Athkatla rather amusing.

(Though sometimes I wonder why people don't follow the sound of the singing and start swinging... ;) )

Since a bard song is an innate, does that mean it bypasses magical resistance?

Some of these invisible singing tactics sound a little cheezy, don't you think?

Never the less I think i'll be starting a new game with that class :D (I'm a self confessed cheese-aholic)
