    Hmm... jousting rules historically varied widely, and mosty joustinf today is theatrical. Unfortuneately, I cannot think of any good sources right now for specific info, but the general idea is to measure out an agrred upon distance, the pole gate is to keep the horses from crossing into each others' paths. You start the run with your lance in the upright position and as you close, you drop your lance down to horizontal to hit the other person's shield, attempting to knock the other off his horse with the force. Now, I've never jousted against another person, but I have run plantaine where I lance a board on top of a pole counterweighted so that the bag of sand swings as it is hit. I've clocked myself in the back of the head many a time because I forgot to duck after my lance hit the board.
