[IMG] When they made BG2 they should have made the game more like BG1 in storyline and structure.

For example in BG you can wander alot more.
You are not stuck in the story, its more like real D&D. You have more choices in NPC's. Just altogether a excellent game.

Now if you took the cool stuff from BG2 like new items, bad guys, spells, kits, higher exp cap,(i could go on) and put them into the BG setting. You would have one really good game.

Hi Kit, I fully agree about the storyline and ability to wander. I reckon the only thing that really benefited BG2 over BG1 was the greater interaction with the NPCs. The way they have their own stories and the romances. I could even live without the kits, strongholds, extra levels etc. Anyway, I've ranted about this too many times before. To stop me repeating myself too much, take a look at:

Bah. Wandering around in a forest to hopefully find some respawned wolves to raise your experience, you prefer that to a little order in a game? You may appear to have less freedom but you at least get more order and better NPC's. Quests get tied together make more sense and don't look like hodgepodge ideas here and there. NPC's talk with each other more and seem more real. NPC's have their own quests. I'm not so much cracking on BG1 as I am standing up for BG2. And ToB has one heck of a story to finish and it's an expansion, there's no room for filler areas that give more "freedom".
    Freedom in BG2:
-To choose what kind of character you want to be(more choices than in BG1 ;))
-To choose a side: Shadow Thieves or Vampires
-More sidequests (and more often than not richer sidequests full of detail) than BG1 to choose from.
-Choice of a stronghold or not
-Choice of completing sidequests before going to Spellhold, after Spellhold, or not at all
-Choice of moving on to one area and skipping another or not (Underdark vs. Suaghin City)
    Lots of "Freedom" in BG2
Note, once again I'm not so much cracking on BG1 as I am defending BG2, I respect BG1, without it there wouldn't be BG2 and ToB.

well, I'm still completing all the side quests on the mainland. I was pretty disapointed with the idea that once I headed off to spell hold I was stuck in this huge long linear storyline.

This game has a bit too much of the Dues Ex Machina that is the last fall back of a poor DM.

(Nope, no way what so ever for you to go back to the city now, because that would mess up what I spent time planning)

Remember all of those hours of walking around in a rectangle to expose the maps on BG1? I'm so glad that's not necessary in BG2.

I agree to you Kitiara, basically these are my thoughts about BG-2. The stroyline in BG-2 *is* mainly linear after you choose your side.

Basically I liked the wandering in BG-2, like trekking to the gnoll fortress or through cloakwood. And Durlag´s tower - i really missed that place for my dc fighter-thief at lvl-6/ ~20 .

The BG-2 surface is great, much improved compared to its BG-1 predesessor - the only feature I miss here is the guard function of the non-fighter characters I used so frequently when playing BG-1.

It would a great thing could you integrate BG-1 and BG-2 into a *single* game - a pretty large one :D

About the other advantages and disadvantages I refer to slappy´s links where I posted some more impressions about BG-1 and BG-2.
