When you first meet Kagain, he tells you that he has lost a caravan he was hired to protect, and that he is particularly in trouble because the son of a prominent nobleman was in that caravan. He says that he will hire you; i.e., join your party, if you will help him recover trhe noble child. So I accepted and took Kagain into the party.

But as soon as we entered the area north of Beregost, with the child in sight, Kagain announced that he'd lost interest, and we could do whatever we wanted. The child responded to all dialogue options by walking away.

Is this a non-quest, or have I missed something?

My memory's hazy here, but I think the quest counts as done, now.

I agree with Midwinter, the quest is over now. You can find the remains of the caravan in the area he lost interest, but it won't affect anything.

On straight BG1, that's it. If you install UB, there is a slightly expanded version which is finishable.

If you install EasyTutu, UB again gives you a finishable quest, and if you install The BG1 NPC Project, there is an extended quest that you can start before or after meeting Kagain, has an extra battle, and ends at the SilverShield Estate in Baldur's Gate. Of course, you want to *not* install the UB component "Finishable Kagain's Quest" if you plan to install BG1 NPC afterwards.
