    Looks like this guy was hip deep in the drug traffic but was enough of a valuable tool/ally/whatever to the US that that part of his career was ignored.

    I guess things weren't unstable enough over there, so this should certainly add to the chaos.

    I wonder what was behind the killing. It's not the first time a high-profile figure is killed by the people supposed to guard him - Indira Gandhi comes to mind - but there should be a pretty solid reason why the bodyguard should be willing to die to assassinate their boss.

    The other thing is, the assassination was basically a suicide mission. The assassin was shot by other guards shortly after killing Karzai - he had very little hope of escaping, and apparently he knew that (being on the security team afterall) and didn't care. The article references possible links to the Taliban, although it will likely be a while before we know for sure.

    The US was friendly with this guy, because (in addition to being the brother of teh Afghani president) he was used as a go-between negotiator with the Pakistanis.
