I've read a whole bunch of times that many people go Grandmaster in Katana and dualweild Celestial Fury and the Dak'kon's Zerth Blade.

What about going Grandmaster in Quarterstaff and kicking some butt with the Staff of the Magi?

    Any other great ideas?

The problem with quarterstaff is that they don't have cool offensive special effects.
But they do big damage and don't require much weapon switching once you got the quarterstaff+4 from ribald.
Probably the best specialisation for first time players without spoilers.

Dak'kon's Zerth Blade is crap, better use belm or kundane in your off-hand.
Other good main hand weapons besides CF are Axe of the Unyielding, Flail of Ages or Blackrazor.

Another option is to make your kensai an archer with +++++ in dagger, the rest in single weapon style, axes and in a blunt weapon like quarterstaff.

When I solo'd with a K/M I did so after specialising to GM in Staff.

In my two weapon slots I would alternate between the Staff of the Magi and Staff of the Ram.

Combat was no great problem. If a fight was combat heavy (Fire Giants for example) then Ram, if something like a lich then Staff of the Magi as it counts as a +5 weapon and dispels magic on strike.

    Worked just fine.

    - of course prior to that it was +1 Q-staff, Marshall Staff and Staff of Rhyn. But it was never 'impossible' by any means.

    That's a statement! I find Dak'kon Zerth's Blade nice. But I don't consider myself a powergamer

Depends what you want; but here's a suggestion for maximizing immunities: wield the Equalizer with Arbane's Sword.

I'd say Staff of the Magi, Staff of the Ram +6, Serpent Staff (WK lvl 5), Staff of Thunder and Lightning +3 are all great weapons.

Go quarterstaff grandmastery if you want a really effective Kensai/Mage...

Crom Faeyr + Celestial Fury. IMHO, that's just unbeatable. The Crom Faeyr gives you 25 str, as well as being able to hurt and kill any Golem (IIRC). The Celestial Fury hits like a Two-Handed Sword (1D10), has a chance of inflicting electrical dmg as well as the almighty stun ability. I don't know if it's a bug, but for me, any character could be stunned, even if +3 wasn't enough to hurt them.

I go with two handed swords because they just look cooler, add to that the awesome abilities you get with them and you've got yourself one helluva fighter when you need him. In this game, I don't think you can put a price on immunity to confusion and charm. I had my barbarian wear Algers Studded Leather even though it sucks up until the end of the game, just to be sure he never got confused. The biggest threat to my team was never an enemy, it was a charmed team member.

I recommend Axes. Earlygame you get Stonefire and Frostreaver. Later game you get AoU +5. Hangreds Axes, the Rifthome axe and Klorgoth let you attack at a distance which is useful in certain situations. The only problem is no new weapon middlegame, but two +3 weaps are enough to carry you a long way.
