    that is the question.

I think I would rather him stay a fighter. After we finished the 3 trials and spoke to the guy in the temple, I chose the option, that I like him the way he is. It said "failure" and there is still a quest listed in my journal.

Is this just here in case I change my mind and want him to become a monk? Do I have to get more influence with him and try again? Is there anything else I need to do?

Not sure about that because I always made him a monk.

Just wanted to be sure you understood that he will be a monk at the same level he was a fighter. He's not going to have the fighter levels and then add monk levels from now on; you basically get him back at level zero and add in all the monk levels to the number of fighter levels he had before.

Do you think he is as good as a monk as he is as a fighter? He has been dishing out some serious damage for me with a warhammer.

The nice thing about it is that monks are weakest when they are inexperienced; you get to bypass all that and start with a powerful monk. It's been a while, but I don't recall being disappointed at all with the change.

Both choices work just fine, gameplay wise.

I've never made Khelgar a monk, although I always play his temple quests to the very end. I keep him as a fighter.

However, I've never managed to pass the influence check for "being fighter is good" regardless of how careful I am to get influence with him. Not once. I'm not even sure if that's possible. To keep him a fighter, you don't really have to do anything else, just keep playing. He plays out just nicely as a fighter too.

Somehow, he has never struck me as monk material. Besides, giving him Ironfist gauntlets and hammer always puts a smile on my face.
The monk quests maybe give him a broader perspective on Life, Universe and Brawling in it, but fighter role still fits him better, imho, at least.

With that said - it's entirely a matter of preference.

I made Khelgar a monk; he is able to use the IronFist hammer even as a Monk.

I don't think the question is whether he is capable of using the hammer but rather how good he is with that hammer :p.
