I just commented to my mother that I used to hate it when Halloween fell on a weekday since it got dark so early this time of year and meant less time for trick-or-treating. Less time meant less candy.

Is this attitude showing an indulgence of greed, gluttony, or both? It definitely falls under the Seven Deadly Sins.

I think you were just being practical. You wanted to maximize your revenue potential, like any smart business would. Of course, your revenue came in the form of free candy, so this is actually better than a traditional business in some ways! :thumb:

I voted Greed. You wanted more candy, you didn't necessarily want to eat it all in one go, so it isn't necessarily Gluttony.

Neither. The weekday problem is big. Halloween is growing worldwide.

Yesterday I had the first people ever in my small village who did trick or treating. I live is a reformed cristian village. Halloween is international, it should be celebrated with a few hours less school and work.

I hope it gaine even more momentum. A holiday in this part of the year is really wanted. In the Netherlands it is easier to put a man on the moon as to change days into holydays.

I voted neither as the problem with it being on a weekday is more about curbing the amount of fun kids have and I don't consider that greed or gluttony. Halloween is probably the most fun holiday for children.

    -Edit: voted "other" (Pride)-

Haven't had any kids at my door for trick or treat. (And I don't really live in a reformed christian village, btw). So I'm not much into Halloween yet. And frankly, I don't care that much. It's a fun thing, Halloween, don't get me wrong. But I'm wary of American traditions flying over to a little country that's influenced by big nations already.

I won't be a partypooper and scare the kids away telling them to cross the Atlantic or so. No way.

Since I'm not very familiar with Halloween-attitudes, I'd have to make a guess on what to vote. I guess Greed would be it. I think (or hope, rather) that competition/success is a big part of hoarding candy. Have fun with your scary outfit and if you're creative, you'll end up with more candy. The more candy you get, the more you realize you did well. Pride would be fitting for me.

Here in the US we have three big ones at the end of every month starting with October. They are Halloween October 31st Thanksgiving Novemeber 25th and Christmas November 25th. We basically have very little during the summer months besides the big 4th of July known as Independence Day. That one is just for eating food and watching fireworks.

I don't see what the issue is with having it on a weekday. Trick-or-treating shut down before bedtime anyway, so it didn't really matter what day it was.

I agree with Snook, it is the limiting of the fun kids can have that is most impactful. Walking down the dark driveway to the front door, waiting for somthing to jump out of the bushes to scare you is the best part. The lucky kids are those who have cool neighbors who actually to to do fun things like this. Ghost moaning, bushes rattling, Dads in Wolfman customes jumping out of dark corners is what Halloween is all about. The candy is for the next few days.

I voted neither as well. We generally don't trick or treat past 8 or 8:30 anyway. There is still time to go home and gorge on candy before bed and I will let the little one stay up a little extra time even if its a week-night. I think my kids are neither greedy or gluttonous when it comes to the treats. Of course they are in it for the loot, and the first night and the next day they eat a considerable amount of treats, but after that they happily go back to their normal eating routine and only have a bit here or there, by their own choice.
