The German truly fuss things up. Every sentence I have done one word has been translated to German and then never been translated back. Seems like the program is weakest in German.

In my case it was German that first made no sense of the phrase. I wonder what happened to the Bible after being translated to hundreds of languages.

I can see how things get lost in translation. When I'm watching spanish (mexican) subtitle movies and read the english translation of what they are saying it's sometimes really off, and that is just strait translation from one language to another.

 

Dutch:
Ga uw gang, maar trap niet in die hoop, want hij is week.

Dutch to english (correct):
Go ahead, but don't step on that pile, because he's weak.

Dutch to French (incorrect):
Allez votre corridor, mais n'escalier pas dans cette esperance, car elle est semaine.

The incorrect French to English:
Go your corridor, but don't stairs on that hope, because it's week.

 

I'm quite drunk at this very moment, so please excuse me, but I'm not really going to read through the article you linked. However, it does appear that languages... or even the one common language both parties speak may well cause grave misunderstandings. It's enough that we all think differently. Those who know more than one language don't think with words, but rather with concepts - which is another good field for wide interpretations, perhaps very much varied, more than one would really need. Let's take social classes, various types of education, regions - each one of them affects the language we speak. Sometimes, for example, it would be more convinient for me to speak English with someone rather than guess what meaning his Polish words are meant to convey. Well, believe me or not, I've really had such thoughts. I also remember one friend, half-Polish, half-Spanish, who understood me better when we were speaking French than when Polish was in use. Well, I could even understand her Spanish mostly, but that's not the point: various conditions, general or personal affect your vocabulary, your grammar, patterns of syntax etc etc. This also works for other people, all of them. Consequently, each of us, in fact, operates in his own set of concepts and ideas. It's sometimes difficult to understand a person without really knowing him. Of course, if one speaks proper language without mistakes and using some socially acceptable syntax patterns, problems are practically nonexistent. Thus it's important that one actually learns the language rather than hide behind dyslexia and some such 'illnesses'. It also never hurts to pay some attention to other people, not only oneself...
