Wow, I know the old thing about saving frequently in CRPGs but that many people saving every five minutes or less is just mind boggling to me.

I generally tend to save when I start a new area or just before I suspect/know a major battle will occur which generally works out to around once every half hour or so.

I based my vote of 10mins. on an average. There are times when I save frequently and times when it is more like 20-30mins. Depends on the game and how engrossed I get in it.

JSBB, why is it so mind boggling? I save every couple of minutes or so. It's not too hard to whack the quicksave button. I die every few minutes on average and I hate having to backtrack so it's essential to my sanity to quicksave as often as I can.

I guess I am just used to not dying very often. I generally play a little conservatively and leave as little as possible to chance instead of relying upon save/reloads.

Back when I started playing CRPGs you almost invariably had to travel all the way back to the starting point - an inn/guild/whatever before you could save. As a result, saving the game was a major pain.

There was certainly no quicksave feature or the ability to save and reload in the middle of a dungeon. This was bloody annoying if you had to quit suddenly but it was what we had to live with and I guess old habits die hard.

I wish I could play that way, but I'm a bit useless and inevitably get smashed to pieces the first time I encounter anything different. Either that, or I get nailed by some unexpected spell or trap. I know it's not very realistic to rely on saves all the time, but it would take me 10 years to complete a game if I had to do it any other way.

I just tend to forget, so I rely on autosaves. In games without autosaves, such as Arcanum, I end up repeating a lot. I once played for two hours without saving. Then died... Fortunately, all the CRPGs covered here (that I've played, anyway) have autosaves.

I depends on what game you are playing and how you are playing it.

For a game of Neverwinter Nights I usually save once every 20 minutes, but for a solo run through BG2 I save every 5 minutes or less. It just depends on what I'm doing.

Yeah, and in IWD at some places, you have to save every 30 secs. Nice with the quicksave function :D

Nice to have the quickload button I may add since loading from main menu every time gets on my nerves pretty quickly (especialy when I try to steal something from a shop)
Anyways I die quite rarely so no need for me to save that much. Of course with games such as Ps:T I never take any chances. However even there quicksaving too often sometimes sucks since the game has only one quicksave slot (unlike IWD2) and therefore you can fully deservedly ram the wall with your forehead when you realize that the vital dialogue you have missed was actually in your PREVIOUS qucksave. :bang:

I usually only save when I stop (which lately has been about every half-hour :( ). I quicksave before anything really big, but I have a lot of experience (and luck) with RPGs, so I don't die very often.

Depends on the game you are playing and where in the game you are.
In IWD you could almost never be sure of the outcome of any fight and had to save quite often. Atleast till you get to Dragon's Eye.
But in IWD II, you don't really have to worry if you have a high AC shield. Whole maps can be cleared without having to save.
