    What we asked:

Q: Are you male or female?
    (570 votes total)

    Male (488) 86%
    Female (82) 14%

Now this one of those rare polls which really, REALLY, require no comment from me.

The results are about what I would have expected although I can see why some people might think it would be more even. Some of our female posters do tend to be highly noticable and give an impression that the numbers are more even than that.

Since we have over 9000 registered users and only 570 VISITORS voted, I don't think this reflects true number of females among forum users.

Given how many registered users don't post anymore, rarely post, or have never posted, I think that the number of voters is in fact significant.

I reckon 570 voters is actually quite a good response given that there are only about 100 or so regular posters on the Boards and a poll is only up for a week.

If someone was up to the task of estimating the 95% confidence interval of the proportion of females, I would guess that 570 would be a large enough sample to produce a statistically significant result.

Yeah, the 5:1 ratio does seem about right. I guess that just means we have to fight over them, then. ;)

Heh, I wondered why there were only two options available in this poll... ;) ...maybe some of the visitors felt discriminated... ;) ...

Again I want to remind that any visitor can vote in that poll, not only registered SP users.

It seems that some people here have certain concepts mixed up. These results are from the weekly poll posted on the SITE pages (nowhere on the boards). And the poll question has only been up for a week. Whereas over 9000 people have registered here over the course of several years. But the board members figure has nothing to do with how many people have voted in this poll on the site. The site pages get several dozen thousand views per day; significantly more than the boards. The percentage of people who take the time to vote in the poll is minute, actually.

So, what you are saying is that we need a full psychological analysis to interpret these values, ie find out if girls are more or less inclined than boys to vote on the weekly poll, combined with an analysis of who grabs more easily to mods, faqs and whatever else is covered on this site. With those statistics we could then generate correct factors to get more accurate results about the distribution of gender under the cRPG-populace, more specifically, D&D and IE-engine games.

Note: This poll was actually the result of a poll in the SoA boards, where we argued the boards were too narrow a pool to test on. It would be nice to now put the both results next to each other (I might do that if I have the time).

Uh, no. That'd be near impossible to do. The poll's accurate enough for what it is: a ratio of male/female SP visitors.
