Got any Latin phrases you'd like to share? Plaese translate if you do.

Virne, you're very welcome to post here  .

My favorites are: 'sit vis nobiscum'-may the force be with you, 'canis meus id comedit'-my dog ate it, 'si hoc legere scis, nimium eruditionis habes'-if you can read this, you have too much education; and my personal favorite: 'quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari?'-how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Edit-If you don't know any, you can check out this site: Latin Phrases For All Occasions . If any of you know of another, let me know...

    Sic Semper Tyrannis:

    The state motto of Virginia.

The words John Wilkes Booth screamed when he fatally shot President Lincoln.

The words on the shirt of Timothy McVeigh the day he bombed the building in Oklahoma.

    "Thus ever to tyrants."

This one's a hit at parties after the first or second bottle of wine (per person). I will allow you to puzzle out the translation for yourselves. :)

    Senex McDonald habeat fundum
    E-I-E-I-O!
    In hic fundum habeat agnum
    E-I-E-I-O!
Baa baa hic, baa baa ibbe,
Hic baa, ibbe baa, ibbeque baa baa
    Senex McDonald habeat fundum
    E-I-E-I-O!

    'Liberate tutame ex inferis'

I don't really know latin, nor is it an ambition of mine to actually start learning it, but I kinda liked the movie "Event Horizon", where this phrase is used. In the movie it's translated into "save yourself from hell"... (Sounds like a neat trick)

    'Tempus Edax Gaga Edacior'

I have a poster on my wall that has this text as a motto. It means something like: time destroys, madness destroys more... It could be a nice text for under my future avatar

    'Cogito ergo sum'
I think, therefore I am, Rene Descartes.
A pretty valid line dont you think?
Another classic that reeks of pure arrogance is 'Veni, vidi, vici' which Caesar said after defeating the King of Pont. I came, I saw, I concquered. A man needs balls to say something like that ;)

'Cui Bono', whom does it benefit is a phrase everyone should keep in mind when they look at the world.

    And another Ceasar qoute:

    'Alea Iacta Est'.

This is what he said when crossing the Rubicon. It means 'the die has been cast' and I use it in p&p AD&D occasionally...

The only non-ecclesiastical Latin I can remember is 'E Pluribus Unum,' which is on all US currency.

    "Out of the many, One."

Sounds almost good enough for B5, doesn't it?! ;)

Tibi fertur valle sub alarum trux habitare caper. Hunc metuunt omnes. Neque mirum: Nam mala valdest bestia, nec quicum bella puella cubet.
The word is that a rank goat inhabits your armpits. That's what's sending them running. It's no surprise; For it's a real hairy monster you've got there and not at all the type of thing a beautiful girl wants to lie down with.

    Quid rides....Vervex?
What are you laughing at, Sheep's Head?

Odi te quia bellus es, Sabelle. Res est putida bellus, et Sabellus. Bellum denique malo quam Sabellum. Tabescas utinam Sabelle, belle!
I hate you because you're a pretty-boy, Sabellus. In my book, prettiness is a dirty word. And so is Sabellus. I prefer war to Sabellus. Sabellus, go to hell! (prettily).

I have a book called "How to Insult, Abuse and Insinuate in Classical Latin." Pretty nifty.

Joacqin: Sum, ergo edo; Cogito ergo doleo.

Sprite: Speaking of wine, cogito sumere *hic* potum alterum... *hic* *hiccup* Re vera, potas bene...

If you can't figure these out, look at the site I mentioned earlier.
p.s. Tal, I know you have one in mind, so post it...

man is a wolf to man
    -mens sana in corpore sano
a healthy mind in a healthy body
    -maximus in minimis
    great in little things
