Some progress is being made in adapting the Level 1 NPCs mod for the Enhanced Edition, see the below:

As yet there is no version of the mod suitable for EE.
Someone is working on a mod that does a few things, it is called NPC_EE:

One possible workaround is to create your own NPC with the desired class then alter the file in Near Infinity to give him/her the required scripts&.

I guess that's cool for those who aren't skilled in manipulating the engine on their own.

Manipulating the engine is not for everyone. They have to take time to learn how to do it and they may only want to give a new class to an NPC.

Playing around with BG2EE leads me to suspect that all NPCs are loaded into the save file when the game starts. Hence a BG2EE version of this mod could only alter NPCs *before* the game started.

If you want to customize an NPC in the middle of the game you will need to be thinking outside the square:
    (a) my approach as outlined above
    (b) a new version of this mod that alters the save game file, hence can be used at any time.

After the party entered Waukeen's Promenade, I drew up my own version of Aerie. I could not get the game to accept her.
Original Aerie is a multiclass Cleric/Mage. My altered Aerie is a single-class Morninglord of Lathander, she was saved in the file AERIE7.cre.
In AR0604 the party went over and killed the two "Peasants', then we picked up the disguised key. Party remained exactly where it was, out of sight of the original Aerie. CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("AERIE7") was used to summon the altered version of Aerie. She was then given the key and allowed to join the party.
Original Aerie was left where she was while party went over to the stairway.

Proving this was straightforward, the altered Aerie was not appearing when the party left Irenicus's dungeon and came to the circus. But she was there when a new party started the game and used the Console to go to the circus.
Some people were hoping that BG2EE might be less restrictive in this matter...

I don't know exactly what they were hoping for. Mutable data has to be stored in the savegame files. There's no other way around it unless it's incredibly generic, which D&D is not.
