Saw that Lieberman (Gore's running mate from 2000) lost the democratic primary in Connecticut! Very surprising, I would say.

I guess being seen as a supporter of the Iraqi war kind of hurt him. Makes you think about the Dems candidates for 2008.

The commentary I'm hearing is that Lieberman has a good chance to retain the seat as an independent, since the Republican candidate is so weak.

Well, he probably has to worry about the Democratic candidate, though. And while it is true that many Dems voted for him in the primary, that might not be so in the general election.

I'm guessing he will keep his seat. If he can maintain the Democrats who voted for him in the primary, I'm guessing he will get the majority of the independent voters due to his more "middle of the road" policy.

In the political circles, this was a relatively "expected" result. Both parties have now, for years become more and more polarized and for that reason do not support moderates who will not support all planks of the party platform.

This makes me wonder if other popular candidates who likewise get turfed for moderate views couldn't form a party of their own. Wouldn't that throw a wrench in the two party system?

15 years ago, no one would have called today's Lieberman "middle of the road". They'd have called him "conservative". Joe Lieberman has changed. The reason he lost the democratic primary is because he no longer acts like a democrat. His actions and voting record for the last 10 years or so are far more in line with that of a moderate republican than a democrat. No matter how many people like him, democrats vote for candidates that act like, well, democrats in the primaries.
