I can never remember, and I've looked a bit, but could someone tell me which stat helps Mages memorize more spells?

    Intelligence....
Anyway when you are creating a character, the class description will tell you what stat is more important for what class.

for mages the stats is you should care about comes in this order:

    Intelligence
    wisdom
    constitution
    dexterity
    strength
    charisma

dont bother about charisma, put it at the lowest value.

try to max out the top four stats before you continou to create your mage.

Strength can be ignored because you will get one off those giant belts to composate that.

i almost forgot, the ring of human influence will composate for the low charisma, though i always try to get the rings that increases my amount of spells.

Actually, it's rather important to have at leaast decent charisma as a party leader as it effects morale. A leader with 3 charisma would find his party running scared quite often.

You could of course let a NPC lead, but I always want to lead myself..

Wisdom isn't that important I think. It's only nice for (Limited) Wish.

I would try to put at least 10 in every stat except for intelligence, which should be 18. You should then have some spare points that you can pump into DEX and CON (to die less fast) and WIS (for the wish spells).

menion leah, thats where the ring of human influence comes in.

and who wants low save throws or bad ac?

i would rather sacrifice charisma for other stats and use the ring of human influence.

Yea, the influence ring, tho who wanna waste a ring slot to sucha useless ring? With all those goodie mage rings out there, it's a waste of space. Put some points in charisa instead ffs.

well, it depends on what class your main char is.

and if he\she have two mages.

but i would still sacrifice charisma for other stats. but thats just me :)

Be warned that there is only one set of mage equiptment in the game.

Intelligence is the big deal for a mage. Wisdom is nice -- IIRC, it should help you against being charmed. Constitution should not be that big a deal -- unless you can get it to 16, it really doesn't matter for a mage if it's 14 or 9. There is NO point to putting CON over 16, as the most HP bomus you can get is the +2 at 16.
OK, DEX should be a priority -- it not only lowers your AC (which is VERY helpful during the early parts of the game) it also makes you more effective in ranged combat, which is what you'll be doing once your spells run out at the beginning of the game.
Strength is worth keeping in the 10 to 13 range -- while you don't want to have your mage in melee, you also want him able to carry a few items!
I see no point in wasting points on CHA. With NPCs like Keldorn, Haer'Dalis, Jaheira and even Cernd to lead the party, why bother?
    My 2 cents, anyhow.

I hate charisma as a stat too. In a multiplayer party, all people get 3 charisma. But not for my protagionist.
I am a Child of Bhaal, I think I feel a little to good to be led by someone else ;) .

The Ring of Human Influence is nice, but there are much better rings.

Charisma does not need to be that high, I'd just keep it around 10 (slightly more than the average cow... :p - and the average everything for that matter)

I don't see the person at the top to be a leader in the sense that they tell anyone what to do -- I, the protagonist, am in complete control! I see the person at the top as the spokesman, the front liner -- kind of like Face Man in "The A-Team"

I guess you could see it like that, but I don't (so I guess we disagree then ;) ). Listen to what the NPCs say when you put them in the top. They say something like: "Do you want me to lead? I'll try my best."
Of course I'm still controlling everything, but it just doesn't feel right for me. But if you have no problem with it, good for you!
