I have a major problem now. I used to have a small problem. I was playing IWD again and it would crash on ocassion, as would any program, and revert to the desktop, if it required any "computing, so to speak. Then, I uninstalled IWD and instaled some other games to watch the intro movies and check them out before I played them, then I uninstalled them. After that, when I went to install IWD again and resume, it was like I never uninstalled. I got the screen with the options, but "install" was shaded out. When I clicked "play" I got something like unable to initiate, or error in ini: something or other. So, I turned off the PC. Then, I couldn't turn it on! I pushed the button and nothing happened. So, I removed the new RAM memory and replaced the old, and then I could turn it on, and obviously I can use my PC and the internet and so on, but the IWD is still the same. I think I have to take it back to the store (I have an extended warrantee, which may be voided due to my tinkering with the RAM, I don't know). Anyway, what's up? Sound familiar? Let me know if you all can before I commit to some repairs.

 

Sure you uninstalled the game and just didn't delete the game folder? Anyway you can just go to the CD in file manager and run setup.exe.

If the RAM had been working nice until that time, I would go talk to the peep who sold it to you.

 

Ok try taking out that new ram and replace it with the old ram. Then try to run scandisk. If you still run into the same error with your c: then i believe it is your c: that may have errors/bad sectors. If that is the case, definiatly take it to the dealer with the warranty and dont even mention that you have replaced the ram.

Otherwise, if it runs fine with the old ram, take your new ram to whomever you bought it from and explain the problems you are having.

 

It sounds like your hardware failure caused some kind of software failure when you uninstalled IWD. If you have the hardware situation taken care of, and you want to keep the computer, you could try a couple of things:

It sounds like your computer still things IWD is installed right? As Mollusken already asked... Are you sure you used the Add/Remove program option, rather than just rhrowing out the directory? (I'm sorry to ask that because you probably did it right the first time). So evidently even though the program isn't there, your registry thinks it is (or something) so you can try running "regclean" on your machine, its a free utility that you can get at Microsoft - good luck finding it though. It might sort out the problem. (I guess the disc checks to see if a certain file on your machine is present before giving you the install option... it could be the registry or just some DLL somewhere on your computer.)

If all else fails you could always format your drive and reinstall Windows etc.

On the other hand, it seens like you could just return the RAM to the RAM people and the Computer to the Computer people. (Kit is right, no need to mention the new RAM to the computer people)

 

Sorry guys, I actually figured it out after I posted this but was off line and didn't delete it. I did have to run setup.exe and thats solved that problem. There were also othe rprograms on my C: that I didn't think were there which I had to remove. I removed the RAM, did scandisk, put in the new RAM but this time kept the old in there too and so far no probs. I don't know why though, but if it works I'm cool with it. Thanks for the responses. I'm gradually figuring out this whole PC thing.
