[IMG] If you wanted to make a gladiator type of character, what skills and weapons should you be proficient in? Wearing leather armour on anyone (except for thief) already makes you look like you are wearing Roman armour!!

Gladiator should be proficient in any weapon. At least a good gladiator.

Roman armor? Not very likely. Besides, gladiators WERE using metal armors too.

To fit my idea of what my PC gladiator would look like, I would have him wear Studded Leather and be proficient in Staff, Club, and Sling. Roughin' it in the ring.

[IMG] But no high/grand mastery please. Gladiators were supposed to die in one fight or the other so their trainers didn't train them THAT much. Mastery... at most.

Gladiators were using anything from tridents to swords and leather armor to metal. You had to, in order to survive. In short, do whatever you have fun with.

Bear in mind, some gladiators were show-men/women and enjoyed making a fight last as long as possible against opponents who posed no threat, they also did tend to a individual weapon which was different from most other weapons, which tended to become their trademark (such as lilacor, as I consider swords ,on a normal basis, objects that dont speak).

I think gladiators should be proficient with all melee weapons, and the different fighting abilities (two-weapon fighting, sword and shield etc.)

for a class you could use a barbarian or blade

I would have thought small shield, short sword and leather armour. Suppose it could incorporate a lot of things though.

I agree with Lokken, a gladiator should be proficient with a range of weapons and fighting styles.

You could specialise in a couple if you wanted, but it'd be fun to play a character that could use pretty much any weapon with equal proficiency. Gives you a lot of flexibility and fits with the idea of a gladiator who would fight with whatever they had at the time.

[IMG] From what I remember of latin in y9 there were two main types of gladiators; murmillones ("fish-men") who wore concealing face helmets, pieces of metal armour and had swords and small shields and another type (I cant remember what they were called) who wore no armour and ran about with nets and tridents. I suppose there were then the slaves who got chucked in with a pointy stick in hand to get slaughtered.
The Forgotten Realms are a totally different set of cultures to Ancient Rome, however. It is, of course, feasible to have a gladiator-type character in BG. Perhaps Gorion tracked the child of Bhaal to an underground gladiator ring or something. I would say go for a barbarian (only specialisation and relatively light armour) with some sort of one-handed melee weapon (perhaps a scimitar?), a sling and a small shield. Just my suggestion...
