Anyone else play this oldie? If you have played Master of Orion 1 or 2, this is pretty much a game with the same gameplay, but without moving between stars and instead moving on land, and that it's a Fantasy game. Great game, with the ability to customize your weapons as you see fit.
    Gotta try it out, y'all.

It's more of a Civilization 1 but set in a fantasy world. I found it okay but got bored of the SLOOOOW combat and the insane difficulty - you can't explore ruins at the start because whatever is hiding in there will kick your arse.

Oh yeah! Master of Magic is one of the greatest games of all time. OK, so the AI was terrible until the third patch and the fan-created multiplayer was...well, the kindest word is "unstable". And it was unbalanced if you wanted to run the Life magick-paladins route. But it had personality, style, clever units, and a great research tree. The parallel maps added an excellent strategic touch, too. I haven't found any game that quite captures what MoM managed. Any MoM veterans have suggestions for similar MoM games available today?

On a related note...I don't suppose anyone here has access to any "MechLords" information (the last game MoM's creators, SimTex, was working on before getting closed down)? I keep hoping maybe there's a beta test copy floating around somewhere...

Was Master of Orion 3 any good?

I saw it on sale at the bargain store for 5 bucks and it looked interesting.

I only heard bad things about MOO3 -- from friends and professional reviewers. Disappointing, since I'd loved MOO2 so much and was really looking forward to the sequel. But hey, for $5, even if you only squeeze a half-hour of fun out of it, it's still worth it!

Master Of Magic was a load of fun, apart from (as Abomination pointed out) the inability to explore ruins without some serious power at your disposal. At least you didn't have to fight to find out what was there, though. It got a bit degenerate in the end, though, but the two worlds, creating your own phenomenally powerful magic items (and giving them to your generals) and some of those massive ritual castings were fun. I would love it if an updated, less plodding version of it was made.

MOO2 is probably second only to Star Control 2 as my favourite sci-fi game. MOO3 is nowhere near as good as MOO2 - far too complicated. I'm sure a micro/macro-economic and sociology specialist might get a kick out of it, but it just wasn't exciting enough for me. But like Grey said, for five bucks it's hard to go wrong.
