[IMG] I use to see futbol games (soccer) back in the late 70's and 80's and I remember players playing even with almost a broken leg; nowadays, I learnt illness names and body parts that I never learnt back in biology class; take Ronaldo's case: he missed 5 games (that's a month) because he had (let me find a dictionary)sprained big toe; another one, Beckam missed 3 games because he had a fissure in the buttock; Roberto Carlos missed 3 games because he had a cold. Football players moan this days because they play 2 games per week and (poor boys) they get tired; they earn in two years what a teacher can never earn in their whole life and teachers have to work 8 or 10 hours at a day, but this is not about salaries.
In a normal soccer game a player runs about 30 minutes, I don't believe any player is running the entire 90 minutes; in an NBA game a player is running almost 30 minutes a game and they play about 3 or 4 times a week and even more and everyone run, jump, rise arms, etc.; in a futbol game a player just runs for brief period; what make them so weak?
By the way, I don't know if this happens in other leagues, I know this happens here, in the Spanish league.

I've always wondered that as well, Sydax. They seem to get much worse injuries than rugby players even though the tackles in rugby are much rougher. And no way does a soccer player have to run around as much as an openside flanker in rugby, who pretty much has to follow the ball the whole game.

I'm not saying one is better than the other - I'm just wondering why soccer players seem to get these really bad injuries all the time.

I have to agree with Harbourboy - you are guaranteed at least one injury per rugby match, yet 9 out of 10 times, the injured player will be playing again next week - with heavy strapping or whatnot. You don't see this with soccer players, they are usually rested. With the obscene pay-packets they are receiving you'd think they could at least do their jobs week in week out?

I think we are starting to see a change in Rugby Union now that the game is becoming more and more a proffessional sport. However I have played both - I only ever missed about 8 games of rugby in seven years. But I reckon I miss 1 in every 4 football games I've played. I can't explain why - you certain get hit much harder in rugby - but a lot of the stress seems to go to your upper body. In football the only "real" contact is with the legs - which are carrying your bodyweight at speed at the same time.
I don't think a teacher is a good comparision to footballers - teachers over here get about 13 or 14 weeks holiday a year. I have a couple of mates who teach they constantly moan about marking etc. Thats complete bull**** in my opinion give me some homework to mark tonight - and I gladly take an extra 9 weeks paid holiday a year.

    easy life!
