My brother is going to the navy in January or a couple of months after, then i get his room to fill with guitars and stuff! My oldest brother is in the army, but I don't think hes staying in it for much longer. Also my pops (dad) was in the navy as an engineer, ranked chief petty officer.

My sister goes to Basic in April (she is going in to the Air Force.) I wish I could have joined the military but they won't take someone like me so I have to settle for "Civilian Auxiliary of the United States Air Force" not a fair tradeoff if you ask me (though they did make me a 1st Lieutenant.)

`I will not be though how'

What does that suppose to mean? Anyway this post is not meant for that.I just want to know if there are those who serve their country's military in SP not your opinions.

I was forced to serve my country for 10 months a few years back. The biggest waste of time I have ever seen and nothing enjoyable about it at all.

I did my 12 month army service in the signal corps, ending up as ... corporal?! Became training instructor eventually, honed my free speech skills :shake: and trained my ten privates well :) - and I have never again been so fit in my life, thanks to running every morning :D . Wasn't that bad a time for me, learned a lot about communications there.

Well, I have now served for 11 months in the Royal Guards in Denmark. Just one more month as an conscripted soldier. This thursday I'm going to a health check to see, if I'm fit for training to international assignments.

    Jesus H. Christ.

You people talk about 10 and 12 months as if that was some extraordinary amount of time.

There's a *bunch* of people (figure, out of 1.5million, about 500,000) in the US that spend that much time in training alone...

I believe they are talking about required service, not the voluntary military service in the US...

I joined the Navy in 2000, but dropped out before my ship-off date because I had some family issues...and now that I've got twins, I'm not altogether sure about the military. But I've been thinking about going Air Force career.

And those 10 months are more or less only training as well for most people.

    BTA, you're probably right.

But to be perfectly honest with you, I don't see what difference that makes.

    Look at it like this:

In the States, you can resign a Commission at any time. The paperwork takes about a month to process. So you're still locked-in (fully) for that one month. If you went the ROTC route, then you're locked in for 6 years (unless you have the cash on-hand to payback the $100,000; that actually is an option, and it quite literally is $100,000 for 4 years of college by military reckoning).

It works a little different if you're enlisted, but not a whole bunch. You're right that you "voluntarily" sign up. In reality, it's actually your call up till about the beginning of the 2nd week of bootcamp. You can, very easily, get out up until the 2nd week (actally, there's another method that works the whole way through, but "wetting the bed" doesn't appeal to most people's egos).

After that 2nd week, you stay at the Company's pleasure. They *can*, and they very often do, ship people out to places that they don't care to be. Standing guard duty, with an M-16, without live ammunition. The Bill of Rights (quite literally here; I'm not making this up) no longer applies to you. You are libel under the 147 articles in the UCMJ. Bread and water for 3 days, sunburns being written up under the "destruction of government property", and the whole works.
Okay, so the sunburn one is just a wild rumor. Everyone has heard it and been scared for the brief second or two, then laughed. There's stranger/dumber things that have happened.

But have you ever heard of someone going to Levenworth for "Conduct unbecoming a citizen of the United States of America"?

Personally, I'd like to see that happen just one single time. That would totally rock. Can you imagine the Jury passing *THAT* one through on the OJ Simpson civil trial?

So, in theory, the fact that every single person is required to serve 12months is different. In practice, however, it ends up making no difference whatsoever.

I dunno. I probably just see things differently. I'd bet there was a time when I thought there was a big difference between the two situations as well.
