When fighting Mind Flyers, they'll suck my intelligence and the second time they do this my warriors will die. Is there any spell to protect against the sucking?

Also how to cure a member who's under Domination? Is there any spell to protect against it?

They are strong, but none are strong enought to best the Bhaalspawn!

Domination & Psionics + Int Drain
Chaotic Commands cleric spell protects you from both, use it on your best fighters.
CC, though, does not protect you from intelligence drain. It will occur with each successful melee attack the flayer does. Counteract it by using as many ranged weapons as possible. Crossbow of speed & Tuigan bow are good choices.

    Advanced Tactics
Use Gate cleric spell (if your cleric has it)
and summon a Pit Fiend. Cast Chaotic Commands on the Fiend and see him slaughter tons of flayers with no damage taken, for he is immune to their melee attacks.

Summoning creatures to beat the fight for you has some disadvantages - afaik you won´t get the XP earned by your fighter.

I don´t use the summoning option for role playing reasons since playing a cavalier and summoning a demon is somehow incompatible in my eyes.

I like having a strong char in front, protected by the "chaotic commands" spell or the "saltwater potion" (you can boost his int too, using the appropiate potions - gives a security buffer for you die when your int sinks to 0). Stop the beasts with the fighter and finish them off with ranged weapons. Mindflayers also dislike cloudkill.

I'm pretty sure you get XP for summoned creature kills, Ragusa, just like you get XP for kills by a creature charmed or dominated.

However, I got through the Mind Flayer areas using a slightly different tactic. Don't laugh, but I put Nalia up front.

I had her mirrored, blured and stoneskined and cast Chaotic Commands on her. She was equiped with a +3 rod of terror and I sent her ahead while the other party members stood out of range and pelted the MF with arrows and bullets. With 17 INT Nalia was able to withstand the occasional hit that got through her defenses. Plus with the rod of terror, if I was lucky, she send a couple of them into a panic as well.

Summoning can be a good oportunity to finish those annoying mind flaying beasts.
Skeletons and skeleton warriors are immune to psionic blast, having no brain, and they are also immune to the flayer's intelligence drain for the same reason.

Use three or four skeleton warriors, supply them with a few good missile unit(your party members) and the mind flayers are piece of cake.

Bowie, I use the same strategy only with my main character in front (class: FMT) and I don't use rod of terror because of it's downside ability.

    Downside?

Yikes! I just looked it up. (20% chance of -1 CHA per use) I didn't read the item description close enough. Thank God I finally gave her a different staff. I'll have to check when I get home tonight, but I bet Nalia's really ugly now...

berserker+improved haste+dual wielding longswords makes mind flayers easy. The berserker rage works just like chaotic commands...never considered using an INT potion...i'll have to try that sometime.

[IMG] Bah, I hate mind flayers-illithid-ulithards-whatever.

Main reason being how can they suck your brains out when your hacking the living daylights out of them? In the p'n'p version of Ad&d Illithids take a fair few WHOLE rounds to suck you brains out, even if your stunned or dominated.

IIRC, I was playing the Demon Knights bit in the Underdark and I used some Mordankeinen's swords. The Demon Knights cast symbol:death on the swords, and when they died they left a necklace. I think it was made from their pommels, 'cos they're immune to psionics, but the amulets give complete immunity to psionics.
And the more swords you summon, the more amulets you get! However, I think they only last for a day or something. :(

I read discussion on those magic swords b4. You can pickpocket those sword (really) and take the necklace. Then equip on ur characters! I think it wont go even the sword unsummoned

btw, when fighting mind flayers, if I go to the next room and rest, after waking up I'll see the message
    Mind Flayer: Brain Devour
    Mind Flayer: Brain Devour
    Mind Flayer: Brain Devour
    Mind Flayer: Brain Devour

etc. What are they doing? Whose brains they devour... we're not fighting at that time, how come got these messages?

actually.. you can pick up a necklace/amulet in the dungeons of the beholders just nearby... you have to pick it off a crevice on the wall... it has 46 charges i think... either 46 or 26... but each time u use it.. its like drinking brine water i think
