A while ago, I saw somebody on this board mention that they were thinking of making a mod to make all the NPCs that join you start at level 1 but have enough experience to get to whatever level they would normally join you at. The benefit would be that you can pick their proficiencies and thief skills.

I'm wondering if he ever got around to doing that and if so, where it's posted. It doesn't seem that hard to do. I might even be able to pull it off with that "Team BG character control editor" I got from here. It's just, why reinvent the wheel if somebody else has already done it?

I'm trying out some of the NPCs I've never used like Skie, but the problem with Alora and Skie is that you get them so late, it's not possible to put enough into their lock picking and trap finding skills to be that useful. I had to resort to Gatekeeper...

The SCS mod has a component, which lets you choose profs and skills. But perhaps you thought about Nythrun's remake of Blucher's alternate NPC's? It's not released as a fully tested mod yet, but should work very fine - it's after all Nythrun we're talking about. Link
BTW some NPCs can be replaced using SCS ie Alora in Gullykin

SCS will only work in a TuTu game though. You should get Easy TuTu by the way, there are tons of other cool mods to breathe fresh air to BG1, but they mostly need TuTu.

If you do use Easytutu, both SCS and BG1NPC allow earlier access to several NPCs, and both BG1NPC and the BG2_Tweaks allow immediate opening of either Coran's Cloakwood map alone or all of Cloakweood except the mines, making it possible to start the game very quickly with the unheard of combination of Tiax, Eldoth, Coran, Faldorn, and Alora. Now *that* would be an odd game indeed - I will have to see what would happen with that particular combination of characters. All that is missing is a Safana Romance...

But this can really destroy game balance, for some of those NPCs have pretty powerful special abilities. Take Tiax's summon ghast ability, or Eldoth's poisonous arrows. These will rip apart any poor xvart or gibberling or bandit you will encounter at low lvls.

It is still nice to have possibilities though. :)
