[IMG] I don't know, cause I've never played a monk...But I do want to piggyback a comment on your post:

How come character barbarians don't look cool like the other barbarians in IWD, and why are half orc characters the same size and build as human characters in the game?

    Tell me! Tell me!

I apologize for raising this topic again, I did read the posting rules and such, but I do think I have a valid question here.
I have gotten the monk in my party to use martial arts moves. I had a bow in first weapon slot, nothing in second, and a quarterstaff in 3rd. I have never seen him use anything but punches (actually weapon movements without the weapon) for any unarmed spot, but he shifted to the quarterstaff, and while holding it, kept using kicks and one or two punches that actually looked like punches. So, I figure it may be locked to weapon spot 3, and remove the quarterstaff, whereupon my monk goes back to the weaponless punching.
By the way, I use Dalekeeper, and set the graphics of my monk to the male human monk graphics. I dont know if that affects it, but I have certainly never seen any monk using martial arts moves with the default fighter graphic.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers!
    V.
