Yes months! Nope not a typo for moths, though I'm sure they are equally interesting (well not necessarily equally).

Ok well I have some questions, because I am me and I ask these questions because I think them.

Who decided how many days should be in each month (I'm referring to the Gregorian, I think that's the name, calendar - 12 months, 365.25 days, used in England?)

Also who decided that February should be the month with the extra day every leap year?

 

I'm sure Gallileo had something to do with it. Or was that to do with the shape of the Earth. Febuary is just innately special, Everybody looked at february and said... Thats special, give it an extra day every now and then as a reward. (basically no idea but i was born in february)

Maybe the pope made it. He does a lot of crazy stuff. When he's not busy making Chevrolet commercials, I think he's dividing up the days.

Seriously, the calender was originally 30 days per month, but Julius(July) and Augustus(August) deemed the months named after them deserved another day, which was stolen from february. A lot later, some peeps figured out that the year didn't consist of entire days, instead, it had .25 days left over, so another day was added to february every four years to make up for it.

That's the gist of it, I think....

 

Hmmm however what about January, March, May, October, December, which also have 31 days? Does March have an extra day because of Mars being Roman God of War and that being, at least I think I've heard tell, where March got it's name.

 

in ancient rome before the Julian calender and before the gregorian, February was special months, since some times the year had two of them. the pontifex maximus(high priest) could, if he wanted to, put in another months, becouse the roman year only lasted 355 days which put the month out of order with the calender. so if the pontifex wanted summer to be in the summer months he could correct the calender, using an extra february. therefor i think it was made the weird months with only 28,25 days.
the gregorien calender, was made by pope gregor, sometime in the medievals(I think, can't really remember when) and it succeded the julian calender almost everywhere.(the russians kept it to the mid 1800). the only differens between the Julian and the gregorian was the 0.25 days.

 

The original calendar was 12 months each consisting of 30 days. As you can see, that leaves 5.24 (Approximately: The year is not 365.25 days) days unaccounted for. An extra day was tacked onto the ends of certain months to add up to this. The history of July and August has already been explained.

The leap year (Once every 4 years except for the centennial unless it is evenly divisible by 4) was added onto Februrary by Pope Gregory III because it only had 28 days.
