Gamecloud has conducted an interview with Jeremy Soule, world's most renowned video game musician. For a couple of years, he's been thinking about a system for the distribution of additional musical content for those players for whom the usual 30-40 minutes of a soundtrack is not enough. Here's a snip:

Gamecloud - Why do you think such a music service for games is needed?

Jeremy Soule - Direct Song was made to satisfy game enthusiasts who want more than the game industry's average amount of music in their games. Direct Song enabled games ship with an hour or more of music at retail. However, with further expansion, our games can hold hours of music. I'll add that games typically ship with an hour of music because of space and budget considerations. Direct Song alleviates these hurdles so that publishers can deliver a better musical experience to their customers.

If the music is from Jeremy Soule, I want every minute of it. I would play a game just to hear his music. I adore the Icewind Dale soundtrack and it's probably the best thing Tal has on the SPS tab.

    Right on!

The only negative side on the games that have great music is that there is too little of it. What if the Kuldahar theme would have been a 5 minute piece or 5 pieces blended perfectly into eachother. What if Morrowind had more, and much more diverse music.

For someone whose spent ages ripping the music out of BG-I, BG-II, IWD, IWD-II, NWN etc etc etc...this would make things a lot easier! :D

I for one, am all for it! :D
