Began this last night now that I have computer that it will run properly on and spent a good four hours in a row walking and walking and walking with hardly anything to battle and level up from.

Seems the only living things that I'm finding that could use a good thrashing are NPCs, in towns, that I might need later.

Any suggestions as to how I should go about leveling combat skills with a new character? A worm or crab every twenty miles isn't getting me anywhere fast. =P

You gain combat skills by exploring (as you are) and mostly by training. Join a Fighter's Guild and start training.

To train you have to talk to somebody who can train you in a skill. It costs money.

[IMG] I think I was playing it wrong... I ended up having my ass handed to me by passing insects and crabs more often than not.

You can get populating modules for Morrowind which can increase the number of enemies or even add things like fish and birds to make the land seem more real and alive.

I tended to get attacked stealthily while defoliating the landscapes

Do guild quest, kill those simple monsters and explore the surrounding caves (but stay clear of a cave south-east of Sedya Neen if you don't want your ass handed to you). Don't use those big fleas, don't use the boats or the mage guild transportation but simply walk from location to location instead. You can meet more dangerous creatures in deserted areas like Sheogorad and the area within and near Ghostfence.

    Thanks for the advice.

It's been real hard to come by the money for the training. I've taken up some thieving skills but even those need advancement through training.

Last night I went waaaay off course to some Imperialist island that was starting a colony and did the first quest for the merchant company there. Only paid 100 and had to float back to the encampment because I was no match for the wolves in the area without the party I escorted out there.

While in the imperialist encampment a bizarre thing had happened once I was trying to leave - I was attacked by a screaming man in his underwear and the guards about the place were ignoring the situation.

I was trying to reflect back to see if I could remember pissing someone off by robbing their wardrobe.

For anyone who is still playing this and having the same issue here is the following advice: remember that gaining levels depends on your major and also minor skills.
Here is an overview of how the level system works:
    http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Level

When i create a char i always stick around Seyda Neen and doing the quests there first. There are a few quests there which you can do. Fargoth's Ring, which can be ended as soon as you enter the village for the first time. Then there is Fargot's hiding place, the quest Vodunius Nuccius and Death of a taxman. By doing these quests you will end up with a healing ring. some healing potions, clothes, weapons, ingredients, books and gold.
In the meantime you could go follow the way to Hla Oad. Just follow the road until you see someone falling from the sky. Pick the book and his clothes and sword (a nice enchanted one, which will do for now). After doing this my next stop is then Pelagiad, which is not far from Seyda Neen. And then i go to Balmora.
If you need money and at the start you don't have much, then there is an easy way to do this. Before you hand over the papers to sellus gravius first rob the place where you are. But not just start with robbing, but work you way around. Otherwise you will loose the item. First take the item and put it on the ground. The guard will hold you, but you get no bounty. Keep in mind that you will get one once you handed over your papers and the game actually starts when someone see you. After this pick up the item from the ground, go through the door and all to the back and put the item in the barrels there. Repeat the steps until you have enough. Also try to pick the lock from chest next to socucius ergalla (after you have picked the one in the next room). I would advise to take all 4 the books of brief history of the empire, the vases, candle and offcourse the limeware platter. Sell the books and other to Arrille and sell the platter to creeper in Caldera, as you get then the full price (and your mercantile skill is way too low in the beginning to get more)
In and around Seyda Neen keep an eye out for hollow tree stumps. There are 2 near the lighthouse, one is holding a silver goblet and some gold, other is holding an iron shardaxe. The axe is worth 100 gold. You will find one more outside seyda neen, in a pond on the way to hla oad and there is one near the water a little walk from the body of the taxman.
