I'm using Windows XP and as of late my mouse works erratically. The cursor moves and the wheel scrolls well enough, but both other buttons don't quite work. Well the left mouse button sometimes responds to the taskbar, but not on the desktop itself, or rather if I click on a window it is as if that window isn't highlighted, quite the contrary, and the cursor neither highlights buttons nor change into a hand when it's over links.
This problem appears from time to time and there was a long period were it didn't happen until it came back with a vengeance. Right now the mouse works but I don't know for how long. Has anyone seen this before or got any ideas?

I have to guess here. I assume you have a more expensive mouse since you do not have replaced it yet. Mice also have drivers and firmware. On the back you might have a type or name. Google it.

If I take mine as a example. I own a high end gaming mouse. It should work great, but only after a driver update and a firmware update. It floated around on the desktop. I contacted the manufacturer and got experimental (beta's) drivers that solved it.

Sorry for the delayed reply. I'm indeed using a relatively new mouse buy I don't think that is it, I failed to mention that I'm using a laptop and this affect the touchpad as well. I've also been having some other difficulties with prolonged load times and there are a number of games that are just impossible to run to any degree of satisfaction, so I'm sorta guessing that the problem is mostly due to my poor maintenance skills. Thanks for your input anyway.
