multiclassing a rogue

    Rogue/Fighter by far.

    You don't need high rogue skills, so a few levels of fighter will allow you to diversify your feats and increase your rogue's fighting potential to the point where he/she can fight on the front lines.

    With the proper equipment and feats, a pure rogue can do this anyway; the rogue in my party does. The bottom line is, a "pure" class character will always be stronger than a multiclass character. Still, if your heart is set on going multi, rog/ftr is superior to rog/wiz
