Yes, good call Dudette, or some variation on a cleric such as a paladin or fighter/druid; the HUGE advantage of cleric spells over mage spells when you want the spellcaster to be good in battle is that you don't have to take off your armour to cast the spell.

A paladin would be great because unlike other cleric-spell casters they aren't restricted to blunt weapons. But there are some terrific maces in the game so that's not too much of a problem anyway; note that paladins don't get spells per se until 10th level though and then don't get past... ummm... fourth level spells (someone go ahead and correct me if I'm wrong on that part).

Multiclass fighter/druids (like Jaheira) are also powerful fighters compared to some other spellcasters because they can use scimitars (other cleric-types can't use anything swordlike) and can wear mail, unlike single class druids.

But if you are finding the game particularly difficult and not fun as a result, you may want to reroll your ability scores a LOT to make sure you have a powerful character going in; the class you choose does make a big difference but your ability scores are important too. I'm not sure how experienced a gamer you are but there may be abilities you underrate the importance of when creating your character; for example, a character with high dexterity and constitution has a longer lifespan in battle no matter what class she is. These tend to get sacrificed when designing fighter-mages, in favour of strength and intelligence- which are no help for your stamina.

Finally, consider your race; every race has its own bonuses and penalties that can help you or hurt you in the stamina department. Some might think elves are cute, but my dwarven fighter-cleric from BG1 was darn near unkillable and a joy to play.

(Someone else jump in to praise the bard- as a dwarf I am downright curmudgeonly about non-cleric magic users...)

A stalker. They can cast priest spells, some mage spells and can backstab and stealth.

Only down side is that they can't wear armor heavier than studded but i never give my rangers armor heavier than that cause i find the stealth ability too valuable.

[IMG] Dragon, wtf is your problem? Do you want an allmighty superhero casting lvl-9 spells while wielding a two-handed-sword @ AC -16? Then use the x-cap remover! With about 6.000 k XP your char will be able to cast them :p
Why not then play a solo elven-fighter-mage-thief and play him to 9.000 k XP (drizzt & elminster both will look like bed-wetters compared to him).

Every multiclassed character shares the xp he gains *equally* on both classes. He will always be a compromise class - I thought you knew that. This means you will be a mediocre fighter and a mediocre mage at the same time resulting in a versatile and, if played properly, very lethal combination.

Mc chars can be excellent (so my fighter-thiefs were pretty good in terms of THACO and due to their high dex and race boni very good thiefs as well).

If you want more spells try a gnomish mc fighter-illusionist - IMHO a potent class to play. He will have a beard, no romance iirc, int-19, be a specialist mage and you'll have Imoen or Edwin at hand to cast the higher level spells. But any fighter-mage will be a much better fighter than both of them. Imagine your char as a melee char and use the spells as your ranged weapons, a longsword/ flail & magic missiles are a great combo.

Additionally there are some great spells from the lower levels, like chromatic org, flame arrow and so on. So I can't understand your mourning - how old are you?

If all this doesn't help I can only recommend the perfect chars of my coice: halfling or human cavalier, a monk, human dc fighter-thief, elven or halfling mc fighter-thiefs, human c kensai-mage or an elven ranger or a human dc ranger-cleric. Altogether nice powergaming chars.

    Try a paladin/inquisitor.

Can't cast spells? Who cares! With your innate dispel magic and true sight you can pretty much render even high level mages worthless, plus you can get carsomyr to kick the crap outta anything left.

Addendum: Okay... WTF is with all these halfling/cavalier references all over the boards lately? YOU CANNOT BE A HALFLING CAVALIER!!!! Go to new game, select halfling as your race... guess what!!! You cannot select paladin as your class let alone cavalier!!!

You can be a Halfling Cavalier with the use of SK. And in 3rd edition rules you can be one as well, so Ragusa is just ahead of the time ;)

[IMG] Vanyril ... despite that fact that your name sounds like plastic you seem to be brilliant and perceptive. I praise your clear judgement! ;) :D :p

btw - I used the BG-1 character control from TeamBG to correct my human pally's race and avatar. I played him through BG-1 then, got the tomes and then imported him to BG-2. Oh well, halfling pallys are IMHO more fun to play than human ones, but maybe I'm just a wee bit excentric.

Step 1: Make a fighter with a high wis.
Step 2: As soon as Imoen releases you from the cage, Dual-Class to a Cleric.
Step 3: Continiue game as normal.

Septic Yogurt is absolutely right about DC the fighter to a cleric at level 7. I did it yesterday, and my new fighter/cleric was at level 7/7 when exiting the Irenicus dungeon.
It levelled up to 7/8 when the party finished the circus quest in Waukeen's Promenade. My character now hits like a 7-th level fighter and casts spells like a level 8 cleric and it is only the begining of chapter 2. It's final level will be 7/20. He'll be an unstoppable tank(with Crom F. of course)

So you cheated then Vanyril, thats what i thought. Tis a shame really, that one would resort to such a dispicable program as Shadowkeeper to edit, oh wait... I used it to make Imoen a true thief, doh!

Seriously, BG is not 3rd edition therefore you cannot, and should not be playing illegal race/class combos. Wait until Neverwinter. :)

I have not cheated, I would never do such a thing good sir. Ragusa is the one who has created a Halfling Cavalier. I'm still laughing when I think of a little Halfling with a Holy Avenger :).

Well Mr. Silvershade: My halfling cavalier doesn't use two-handed weapons for I feel it would not only look funny but also being out of the role. So I make him use longswords, flails, maces and sometimes katanas as well - single weapon style. Carsomyr is for Keldorn ;)

    To defend Ragusa some more...

Personally I hate cheaters that can't finish the game without cheating...

But, here is just another example of Black Isle racism in the game that can only be overridden by cheating. In these rare cases when you simply MUST use cheats, I suggest you USE them.

    Thumb up for halfling paladins!

Why don't you try a plain magic user like the sorcerer. A high level sorcerer with the proper spells can be a formidable fighting machine.

That is pretty funny that Bioware forgot to implement size factors for weapons. I had Mazzy weilding the Vorpal Sword in SoA and an even nicer two-handed sword in ToB, and boy is it an entertaining sight.

To Vanryil: Sorry I meant Ragusa.
    To Ragusa: Cheater!!! :)
To Extremeist: Black Isle racism? Hardly. These have been the rules since D&D first edition 30 years ago.

    Halflings using 2H swords?

An interesting sight it could be how a 3-4 feet tall fellow possibly could wield an 5 feet long 2 handed sword...
