I am in Shaendar, Sharendrar, Shaen-whatever bridge, My F/R was "Hide in shadow" she attack a orc, but only did "4 blunt dammage" damage no "sneak for X Y dammage" (X: ammount Y: dammage type if you didn't understand what I meant) what's the problem?

She's got fighter: 1 Rogue: 2 and she's using a WarHammer, I don't see wy she couldn't sneak attack that orc?! (Anyway the orc IS death)

I know that in BG1 & 2, backstabs definitely couldn't be pulled off with a blunt weapon. I don't whether or not that was carried over into the 3ed based IWD2.

If I was a betting man, I'd say you need a slashing or piercing weapon to backstab.

My rogue uses that +5 staff of something that does poison (see "Best weapons" -- also the resale value is over $80k, which is close to the highest). She started the game with a dagger and didn't get many backstabs in. I found the staff in chapter six. I forgot one time to give her the dagger and I found out that she can do backstabs (sneak attack in IWD2) with that weapon so I presume any weapon will do. Often it will be for 50-70 points. This is my fourth time through (kept the weapons but started with level one characters) and for the first time in 4 games, she has kilt [sic] someone (an orc, an orc, respectively, twice) with her sneak attack. And I didn't have weapon specialization yet either. Of course she used the goblin dagger in the Prologue and didn't need to sneak attack.
I only do the fighter four levels for those perks and then pure rogue. She is a Tiefling level 10 (fighter 4/ rogue 6) -- at level 16, she can get envenom and I will try that with other weapons -- can't get it until then because of the alchemy prerequisite and the game won't allow you to spend very many skill points there even if you have lots (bug?).
    IaaA?

Maybe you just need to try some more times. A sneak attack doesn't always succeeds.

And something else, I think you don't need especially piercing weapons. It's not backstabbing like in BG2 I think, it's sneakattacking, so no stabbing so you can also use bludgeoning I think.

    Good luck

I think I solve the problem, I need to be behind the enemie to sneak attack. anyway if the attack is succeful and the ennemie doesn't see you *it's* a sneak attack :aaa: :aaa: :aaa:

    [IMG] So, about sneak attack:
1- You can use ANY WEAPON for sneak attack.
2- You MUST be behind the foe to sneak attack him.
3- A sneak attack will not ALWAYS succeed.
İs there anything that I need to know? :D

IaaA, alchemy is cross-class skill for a rogue. So, your max points in that skill could be:
    (Char lvl+3)/2 for cross-class skills
    Char lvl+3 for class skills
Also, envenom weapon is not that effective. Just my two cents... ;)

If you are exactly in the back of the enemy the sneak attack always work, but a fighter is a melee face-to-face combat.

Backstabs did not always work in BG2 so why do sneak attacks always have to work in IWD2?

Get with it, sneak attack is not always successful. Just enjoy it when it is.

Maybe high dexterity is increasing the chance to hit.

I have rogue 10/wizard 11 with 30 DEX. I do not always succeed at sneak attacks. Move silently is the skill that increases chance of sneak attacking.
