[IMG] I am playing the game for my first time and have a monk(I am very very happy with him) though I want to know what others think of a good class to start with.
My friend is playing with a thief and took 250% with pick pockets, hence he has infinite cash.

    What do the "experts" think?

[IMG] Yes your friend is totally right - a thief is every daring adventurers class of choice, love them.

I'm pretty sure you can't go over 200 on thieving skills....

A monk is a death on feet after level 15. A good tank. Maybe the best. Definitely the best.
Get yourself a healer (Jaheria), a thief/mage (Jan), another tank (Minsc, Korgan, Keldorn, Mazzy), a cleric (Viconia, Anomen). Actually, two thieves in one party are killer too. Have one skilled in picking, and one in sneaking. Mages are for removing spell protections on the bad guys and summoning beasties to aid in battle.

There's no one great party, rather, there's a bunch of different combos that work. That's what make the game re-playable.

I currnetly have a monk, and toast is right-walking death. But I went through last time w/ a mc ranger/cleric. Dual weilding Flail of Ages and Crom Faeyr w/ iron skins and blade barrier is death of another sort.

If it fits your view, try the Jan Jansen/Minsc combo. Pure comedy!

'and you need to stop feeding him so many crackers. Boo is getting portly and all those crumbs make the bed itchy' (or something along those lines)

I never had Jan in my party, because he looks old and I can't use old people, exept for Keldorn.
But I heve heard that Jan also wants to steal Boo from Minsc, is that right?
And if he does steal it, can Minsc get him back, or does he go into a beserker rage, killing Jan?

Punisher - what's wrong with old people in the party? I now feel very sad, I'd better go and hang up my staff with its nob of he end and retire - too old....

Anyway, back to parties and start up characters. You can get away with pretty much any type of character in the game, just pick and add other computer characters to balance any of your weaknesses. It also seems to be generally true (though less in BG2) that its easier to survive at first as a fighter type but you become more powerful as a magic type (please don't start another great 'outraged' debate along the lines of barbarians, monks, etc). Anyway, go with whatever character appeals to you most, finish the game, start again and try something different (each of the major classes get a different stronghold to help replayability).

Finally use the search function on this forum to look up other people's views and earlier discussions. One quite good one recently can be found at: http://www.sorcerers.net/ubb/Forum2/HTML/001723.html

    Have fun.
