My theory on Math

Discussion in 'Whatnots' started by Thalantyr, Oct 11, 2001.

    my math theory

    1st grade you get 1+1=?
    you know the basics
i can see the propuse for that
    you'll need that later
im skiping a few years here
    now your in Highschool
    you get lines and letters
    letters in math?
    hu'h? Wtf is this?
Ok now you getting in more advanced math
    Quadratics
    System of Equation
    Rational Expressions
By the time you in your last year of highschool math takes about 1 page per problem and it looks like Someone from pluto
    wrote it.
Then College Tests and test of it. The math gets harder and longer...

    Come on
Tell me when im going to pull a pen and a peice of paper out and go Let x -a740%2(8)bla bla = all this stuff. Just give me a break. im never going to see this stuff agian unless i become a teacher. yea right! Me a teacher! hahaha

Some... wait Most of this stuff is useless i waste of my time. I wanna go out have fun, hey i dont even have my flying car yet! wtf are they waiting for? hell to freeze over?
Math is like me going to another solar system and i pick up a book and a see alien writing.!!!

(might have got less funny towards the end)
(give me a break im tried i just spend 1 hour doing my math HW)

    Edit: spelling mostly  :spin:

[IMG] I looked at this thread because I thought it was about me, and was terrified to see what theory Thalantyr developed about me.

Seeing that it is about "real" Math ... the only subject I got a "D" in, I'm going to skim it, breath a sigh of relief, and move one! :spin:

Young man, how are you ever going to learn to calculate the area under a curve without learning integrals?!

Yes Mathetais it was going to be about you then i had to do my math Hw and i was thinking.... Then i decided it would way to mean of me to pick on Mat. We share the same name. Well im i right or what?(about the subject Math)

You are so ungodly right! Math just sucks :cencered:! I hate math with my hart and sole! My math teacher is from another country(not picking a fight), cant really under stand her voice. But I'v got these problems, intgers or something like that. Where we have to find what x is in ex: 4-7x=9+5x how and what the :cencered: is that! I'm never going to see it again unless I have kids and their tring to learn it and I'm tring to teach it to them. Where do these people live you write this stuff? Then moon?! And were do they get the nerve to say "O, it's about time to put in a new way of doing the same old thing. Lets make it one problem equals one note book. Haha!" It just plan ticks me off because I'm a farily good student and make the grade when I have too. But this stupied algbra class! I mean, ARG!!!!! Math should only be five equations: adding, subtracting, multaplying(sorry tried, cant think) dividing, and only for collage, fractions. Thats it. All this other stuff we can do with out. I mean how hard is it to land a rocket on the moon or launch some shit into space! It's going to hit something sooner or later. I dont care what any one says, math sucks and thats the bottom line. AMEN!

  6. Ha! I get As in math all the time. As far as I know, it hasn't gotten any harder for me yet. It's still like 456 of 300.

Well, apparently your verbal skills aren't going to get you a job, DragonRider. Stick with math. :1eye:

Just kidding! And I even made sure he was an American before flaming his spelling! It's a newer, kinder, gooder, fragranter Shralp!

[IMG] If all you had were integers, fractions, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing to work with, it would be impossible to land a rocket on the moon or launch some shit into space. Nearly everything technological in this modern world of ours would be impossible. You would not be sitting in front of that computer posting that message if everyone had the same attitude that you have towards math DragonRider.

Perhaps YOU do not need anything more in the realm of mathematics, but most assuredly WE do :)

Oh, and Thalantyr, if your career is in any scientific or engineering discipline, you'll see it again...

I'm unlucky when it comes to math. I'm in my FIRST year in High School, and for the program I'm in, it is compulsory to take SIX courses in 'Long Math' that has only TEN compulsory courses for those in the National program to be completed in the span of three years! Even the shortest Math I can take will be more than what is thought in the National program.

If I'd take Mathematics HL (Like I once thought I'd do, getting a D from the first course changed my mind...) I've been told, that the first year(s) of COllege MAth would be nothing new...

Poor me. I am a historian and an author. I can't stand math, even though I got the best possible grade in my secondary school diploma...

We have polynomial function formulas going on at the moment, and dividing polynomials and doing even more function formulas... And our teacher can't pronounce English.

I love the logic of mathematics, and the thing that there are many rules, but almost no exceptions. Mathematics is the most important tool in the world, when it comes to understanding how stuff works.

I can do math. But frankly, math makes me miserable. :(

I went to college straight out of highschool, but I only spent one year there. Didn't make the money to go back so I went into the AF. For approx. 3 1/2 years I never needed math. Couldn't remember using it once. Now, I am back in college for 2 yrs I studied the hell out of it. But, because my major in HR doesn't really require much of anything, except your basic math. None of my upper level classes have it in them. So, it has been 1yr since I used it. Unless you count grocery shopping. :)

I know we need it. But I am sooooo relieved that it won't be necessary in my line of work!

[IMG] In short Mathematics has to do with a lot of things. The schools obviously do a bad job in distributing this, since what you are complaining about happens all over the world.

But just wait untill you come to university.

tripple integrals, taylor polinomials, green, stoke, boyle. Yeah. A mental challenge. But also usefull.

    a) engineers of all kinds
    b) programmers
    c) the industry
    d) biology
    e) psysics
    f) genetics

    etc. etc.

[IMG] Well im sure math is important but have never been able to stand it. Wait a minute when i was in 1-6 grade i was among the best in my class in math but something happened when i started the swedisg equivalent of highschool i just lost everything i knew about math and since then i havent got a clue. I really relly sucks at math once during my last year in school (gymnasiun in Sweden) my teacher told me that i didnt need to go to the classe cause i was hopelessly behind and wouldnt understand jackshit of her lecture. She was right and no she wasnt an evil teacher but had disturbing influence on the class when i sat in the back and made unhappy noises she helped my so that i could atleast pass the first two math courses.

Well i my rambling is over my final statement is that math is evil and better dealt with machines. I know that you need math math to build those machines but hey forget what you know after the machine is built.

I am sure I will be in the majority of people who actually enjoys math as long as it is not mind-numbingly tedious. That aside I think that the whole point of doing advancement mathematics is to build up an understanding of logic, and in math it is more important to know why the given equation is calculated than simply how.

I think the last part of joacquins post pretty much describes the big deal here :)

Yea i know ill see math in jobs. But im mainly talking about the very longones that make no sence. Someone was complaining about algebra. thats the easy stuff.

i just madd at the math im doing now, all the other stuff was A's and High Bs easy stuff.
Most math comes easy to me.

The hard stuff is just like...(thinking of a word)

[IMG] Learning math isn't important for most people because of what they are learning but because of how they are learning to think. There are of course plenty professions that require mathematics but even those that do not benefit greatly from the style of thought that mathematics teaches

For example, those students that do best on the LSAT's and law school are 1) philosophy majors and 2) mathematics majors. If you take much real philosophy today you'll be taking logic, symbolic logic, modal logic etc. which is just like high level mathematics or say, organic chemistry.

If you can learn mathematics, the disciplined logic it will teach can carry over to your writing and greatly increase your ability to break down others arguments as well as fashion your own logical arguments. Looking at some of the arguments on this board I think more people need to take some math, so buck up mate.

[IMG] I've always been fascinated at how math and physics relates to all the common, ordinary things in life. I've taken up through Differential Equations in college. I admit, when I was taking calculus, I wondered where this stuff actually got used on a day to day basis. But differentials now.... virtually every process of nature can be modelled by a differential equation. I've had people ask me what will happen if they do a certain thing just to be funny; they are shocked when I sit down, scribble an equation, and tell them the answer in about 15 seconds.

    MATH ROCKS!!!!

Ok i have a test over equations tomrow and i was wondering if any of you could tell me how to it. Here's two sample problems:

    4(x-5)=7x-9
    &
    1 (t+7)=6t-8
    -
    5

Thats a fraction, the bottom one. Please if anyone can help me do!

Yes I do agree that I was wrong on the space and computer things that have to do with math. I am very sorry if I ticked anyone off. Math is just hard for me and I have this last test to try to pass of else I fail and lose my creit for the semester. :(
