Neverwinter Nights Helps Pupils

    It's common knowledge that students prefer computer games to studying. Over the recent years, attempts have been made to trick students into learning something by playing games. Atari and BioWare have launched a Neverwinter Nights based project in UK's West Nottinghamshire College. Here's a snip:

    Computer firm 'Atari' along with development studios 'BioWare' are answering back critics of all that is wrong with computer & video games by boosting the quality of education through West Nottinghamshire College's revolutionary 'Neverwinter Nights' project.

    Many students lack the motivation to complete conventional paper based assignments. Gathering evidence for qualifications such as Key Skills and Wider Key Skills has been very difficult.

    It has long been noted that learners enjoy playing computer games so Bioware and Atari's 'Neverwinter Nights' game has been used to produce a tailor-made games scenario directly linked to qualifications.

    Perhaps it's not so bad an idea, but come on. People go to such great lengths to avoid taking the damned book in hand and just studying. Personally, I'd rather take a normal book than bash my way through anything interactive. I don't touch that stuff. Then again, if it helps someone...

    It doesn't give much information about how the learning is achieved. That would be interesting to find out.

    They say it's about skills, so I guess it's task-based. Educative modules and quests, whatever.

    I didn't post it because it was one of the lamest articles I've ever seen. Practically no actual information whatsoever. As if someone set down to write an article, but then decided after the intro that they don't really feel like doing it, and just posted it as it was.

    I saw a few more articles about this a few weeks ago - didn't read them over much, but they might explain it in a bit more detail. I'll try fish them up if you're interested, Meatdog (should be in History somewhere...). Will look them up after my exam tomorrow!

    I saw two or three, but they were all the same. Most likely all drawn from the same source, so they couldn't be any different. The one chev linked was actually the best of the bunch.

    Good links, Rotku. The first and third aren't very informative, but the second tells a bit more, while on the fourth, I actually got a better idea of how they did it. But, concerning the fourth, you'd better had linked to the FAQ which is more informative than the little page with generalities.
