NWVault has interviewed David John of the Dragonlance Adventures team, who created the music for BioWare's Neverwinter Nights premium modules. Here's a snip:

    8) Could you describe the process you took in creating the pieces? What software and hardware did you use?
The process of creating the actual melodies and harmonies is somewhat mysterious. Often, the piece seems to write itself and other times I find myself turning to theory to create textures and harmonies that are suitable. Mostly, it's a combination of the two approaches - research and intuition; education and instinct.
In terms of technology, the tools have progressed to the point where the essential elements are some powerful PC's, a keyboard (no, not the kind I'm typing on) and orchestral libraries that are available from various music developers. I won't get into a detailed analysis, but for those interested in the practical side and the nuts and bolts of modern music composition for games, there is plenty of information out there via google.ca

    Read the rest at NWVault.
