Ok I've never beat the game before though I've restarted it like 500000000000x times. But I think I've finally found a party that I will enjoy.

    Elven Archer
    Aerie
    Minsc
    Keldorn
    Yoshimo -- Later Imoen

but the only problem is i'm not sure who my sixth member will be. Should I maybe take Viconia or Anomen? I think I need more spell power because Aerie doesn't advance as a pure mage or cleric. I was thinking of taking Haer-Dalis but I heard that he duels Aerie for your love and I want to romance her.....*sigh*

Can I get around this somehow?

You can't go wrong with Anomen, and to tell the truth, a second cleric and a third frontline melee character will greatly improve this party. If there is one change I would suggest it would be to take Jan instead of Yoshimo. As a thief, Jan will serve your needs well, but will also provide you with a second source for mage spells until you acquire Imoen.

Viconia is not as good of a choice seeing as how you have Keldorn in the party. They may come to blows. Also, since you are planning on romancing Aerie, having both she and Viconia in the party could cause some problems as well.

So definitely Anomen, and either Yoshimo or Jan, either of which could be switched for Imoen in Chapter 4.

Take Jaheira. She is always run down as a poor character, but in my opinion she can be very powerful.

Her fighting skills are pretty good and will keep improving throughout the game - just give her a belt or potions to improve her strength.

Her AC can be very good and her HPs are pretty decent so she can tank well. Plus, her druid spells (like iron skin) can keep her protected in battle for ages.

She has some of the best anti-mage spells in the game (i.e. insect plague). With her and Keldorn you can take out any mage easily.

Plus, there are several good quests involving her.

I have used her in every party I have played, including BG1. I never romance her fully and always choose Viccy.

Used right she is awesome. But, remember, she is wasted if you keep her at the back as the spellcaster.

hmm ok I've given it some thought. What about this?

Aerie (backup cleric & mage, romance)
    Edwin (mage)
    Minsc (tank)
Yoshimo (thief) --> Imoen (thief & mage)
    Elf Fighter (d/w scimitars/katanas, tank)
    Anomen (cleric, tank)

does this sound like a good party? I don't want to much magic in a party, or too little. :S

[IMG] I usually have a problem taking Yoshimo. Anyone who knows of this board slao knows Yoshimo only lasts until Spell hold. In the mean time he is taking exp points that could go towards a diferent NPC. Personnally Jan is good since he gives you great thief abilities due to his inventions. Having him as a secondary spell caster also helps in a bind. If you have the ring of Regeneration you can get by for a while with just Jan, yourself, and Minsc. After your character has hit 500,000 exp or so I start adding a fourth player. Your fourth player will have higher exp points than if you meet him at the beggining. This allows your party to be more powerfull as a whole. I Ususully like adding Keldorn, Korgan,Vicci, or Annoyingman t that point to attempt the more challenging areas.

Yoshi is perfect if you plan on getting Imoen back and need to drop someone to do so. Otherwise I tend to agree.

I'm stuck in the same boat as the original poster. I start the game, get into a character, and then I decide I don't really like him too much.

I've never gotten past chapter 2.

I'm starting to think that I need a thief multiclass as my main character (I'm hating dual classing more and more, and I don't think there's much of a point in playing a single-classed thief). My other self-imposed requirements are that I want to be good, and I want to be in a party (no solo stuff!).

I have narrowed my choices down to the following:

Dwarf F/T -- can use that cool hammer
Elf F/M/T -- can do everything, but might take too long to advance. Can do any romance (except Viconia, but I want to use Keldorn anyway, so she's out)
Gnome C/T -- interesting multiclass. You can never have too much healing, and he can use the flail of the ages. Can also romance Aerie.

I plan on filling out the rest of the party as follows:

    Definites:
Jaheria (I don't like Cernd, but I do like Druid magic).
    Keldorn (He just plain rocks).
Aerie (stick her with the mace that gives and 18 STR, and the robe that reduces her AC and casting time (double benefit w/ sped up cure spells), and she's great too).
Imoen (eventually. I just like her more than Nalia).
    Maybes:
Korgan (ok, just for that one quest. I don't think it's too hard, and it's like free XP and magic stuff).
Yoshimo (If my party is only 5 others, I'll carry him to spellhold just to watch his story unfold. I think it'd be cool, and if leaves a spot open for sis).
Minsc (some like him, so don't. I like him, he's fun. I'll also probably need another tank in the party).
Anomen (unless I play the gnome, I'd really like to have a straight Cleric in the party. I could be convinced otherwise, though).

I'd really like to have a party member be able to each weild a particularly good weapon during the game. While Keldorn is spoken for, and I listed Aerie's stuff, I don't know what else to use.

I've recently made an interesting party consisting of all the 'nobles' that I can find plus Imoen which means my party is...

    <charname> (Anezka) - Female Elf Fighter/Thief
    Valygar
    (Sir) Anomen
    Keldorn
    Nalia
    Imoen

It's been very fun so far especially having a strong frontline and two mages with shortbows and nice DEX scores for when I don't need to worry about casting magic for a particular fight. If there was another 'noble' I'd replace Imoen but I have her for roleplaying and I think I need the extra mage.

Nice party - very balanced IMO except for the one cleric.
A "noble" party? You mean Nalia De Arnise-type noble or Mazzy Fentan-"noble"?

Noble as in they are from well bred families with titles to land etc.

On the balanced party thing of only having one cleric I must disagree. I have Valygar who can cast clerical magic, certainly not to the higher levels but I just have him use healing spells only (its not as though ranger or paladin spells are that effective at anything else anyway).

I was thinking about having just Anomen to tend to your full-level HP's. :)

Nothing wrong about that, I admit, only that IMO having a party with fewer than two people who can cast druid/cleric spells beyond level 3 is a hussle.

If you want to have a true "noble party then lose the fighter thief and replace with a monk, who can detect trap's (not disarm though) and hide in shadow's.

I can't personally picture a fighter who stabs people in the back, and steal's for money been a true "noble" type party

    Replace Yoshi/Immoen with Jan
and take Jahiera as she has druid spells (as opposed to cleric spells) and if you stuff up the romance with Aerie you can go to Jahiera.
