[IMG] Ah, the postseason wonders have truly begun! Pedro to the Mets, a sad but justifiable story. I mean, the guy ONLY has 92 million dollars, why not go to a team offering him 54 more? I think it's sensible... Not.

You've got to be kidding me! Pedro to the Mets over a lousy fourth year for the same average amount of money! Come on! You don't need any more money, Pedro, and you have so many friends on the team, and millions of fans that love you. Why man, why?

Saber - don't sweat it. He's going to be the Mets' next Mo Vaughn. He's got a torn labrum already and is on the tail end of his career (33 years old with a lot of mileage). He can't really go past 6 innings these days and he's a bit of a prima-donna.

The Mets have become very good at overpaying players who are past their primes.

That being said, I read something funny about your (apparently) beloved Sox and their signing of David Wells:

Any time you can spend several million dollars on a 42 year old, 300 pound, semi-crackpot, to shore up your rotation, well, you've just gotta say "YES."

Not sure that he was an upgrade.

Haha, yeah, I'm semi-pissed about Wells, but hey, if he contributes, we(being us, the sox)'ll take 'im!

And yes, i agree with you Pedro analysis.

By the way, we also signed John Halama today, and although he is average at best, he's a lefty, and they're aren't many lefty starters around anymore.

As a Phillies phan, this is bad news...I hate the Mets! We picked up Lieber from the Yanks, but will it be enough?

As a Mets fan, I absolutely agree.

I don't like the move. I mean, of course my team will be better when Pedro takes the mound every 5th day (if that, the guy needs to be babied). Pedro is a diva, and not a good fit on a team run by a guy who's managing for the first time.

Part of me says "it's not my money," and "so I shouldn't care," but I do.

Someone within the Redsox organization must have pissed him off, maybe that's why he chose to go to a crappy team.

Pac Man - I think you're wrong on this. I think Pedro was out to get maximum guaranteed dollars for the tail end of his career, to get maximum exposure and to get maximum stat padding to ensure a clean Hall of Fame pass.

    So:

The Mets were the only fools in the marketplace willing to guarantee a 33 year old prima donna power pitcher with a torn labrum and obviously declining stamina a four year contract. He's getting $53 million over 4 years unless he does something so stupid as to allow the team to void the contract (see Giambi, Jason or Neagle, Denny).

The Mets are the only National League (more on this later) team in the country's top market (NY) which can provide him the advertising dollars he wants on top of the salary.

As for the National League thing, here's a guy who wants to pad his stats for the Hall. In the NL, he gets to face a pitcher 11% of the time. That means that he's only facing someone who could legitimately get a hit 89% of the time. Thus, his ERA will go down (run production is lower in the NL), his opponents' batting average stat will go down, his strikeouts will go up, his walks will go down, and, what's more, I think the NL East and the NL in general has weaker batters than the AL equivalent.

Ta-da -- no brainer decision for Pedro that has nothing to do with anyone in Boston ticking him off at all.
