    I just realized that I couldn't reroll Kivan's hit points after he levelled (he rolled a 1!!!). I couldn't reroll it even after I cancelled his level up. Is this normal?

    Also, what is the daage stat on range weapons? Is there a diffence between long bow and xbow for example?

    When you hit the button, and you saved the game afterwards, you're stuck with the roll.

    The only way is to reload a game that was saved prior to hitting the button.

    Save the game before you hit the level-up button. Check the HPs and if you don't want them the re-load and retry.

    Arrows do D6 base damage and the types of arrows have diffent damage and effect.

    Short Bows have no bonuses. Longbows get +1 hit. Composite longbows get +2 hit and +1 damage.

    Bolts do D8 base damage, plus any special effects from magic bolts.

    Light crossbows get no bonuses. Heavy crossbows get +2 damage.

    For outright damage crossbows are best as there are some very good magical crossbows. Their limiting factor is the number of attacks per round, which is 1. A bow can do 2 attacks per round.

    So, although a bow can do less damage you have more chances to hit, so in the long-run it should average out to more damage. Also, if your character is an Elf they will also get a +1 hit with a bow, but not a crossow.

    Someone is welcome to jump in here with some maths to prove or disprove this if they want.

    Assume using a heavy crossbow or a composite longbow. Normal bolts average 4 damage. Normal arrows average 3 damage.

    15 THAC0-> Longbow 13 THAC0
    -> Crossbow 15 THAC0

    After ten rounds:
    Longbow:
    20 Attacks
    4 damage per hit
    13 THAC0- 35% hits
    0.35 * 20 * 4 = 28 damage

    Crossbow:
    10 Attacks
    6 damage per hit
    15 THAC0: 25% hits
    0.25 * 10 * 6 = 15 damage

    Thus vanilla longbows are far better than vanilla crossbows. Getting the Heavy Crossbow of Accuracy or the Long Bow of Marksmanship may affect this however.
