Happy Freaking Valentine's day! Take a look at this. I'm religious, but I advocate a system wherein one particular school of thought or religion is not lifted up and given preference over another, or s*** like this happens.

Meh. As far as injustices under the Saudi regime go, this is pretty tame. Remember that rape victim they sentenced to 90 lashes?

I'm with Drew on that one. In a country where they cut off your hand if you steal a loaf of bread to feed your kids banning Valentine's Day doesn't seem like such an issue.

I'm fed up with all that Valentine's Day nonsense anyway. I'm pretty sure some people make a crapload of money each year because of the sense of conformity that urges us to get cards, flowers and gifts to loved ones and other significant others (it's not a good time to have more than one of these).

Besides in a country that embraces polygamy do you realize how costly it would be for your average Joe to indulge into all that consumerist nonsense.

Valentine's Day is probably the best day to be single anyway as you can hit chicks who are desperate to find a date so they're not alone on V Day.

Furthermore you'd think that there would be no point in going on Cupid's turf and actually stealing his own tools (the arrows and the representation of Eros the God of Love as a winged Cherub).

Pretty stupid, but also pretty tame and not at all surprising, considering.

Well she was asking for it! She was being all hot, sexy and mysterious with that black niqaab, showing curves that allowed for a lot of fantasy  A muslim man can't be blamed for not resisting the lust that she was radiating.

I think the 90 lashes you talk about were for a 13 year old girl that took a mobile phone to her school and assaulted the school principal. I'm not sure for which 'crime' she actually received the 90 lashes.

Both these cases are about women who received 100 and 200 lashes respectively after having accepted a ride from not-related males who then raped them. The rule is very simple, if you allow yourself to be alone with unrelated males, then you're a whore and you accept responsibility for all consequences.

I'm surprised Saudi Arabia allows cell phones, seeing that the Quran doesn't mention them...

The Quran may not mention it, but the story goes that the Emir ultimately allowed phones to be brought in after hearing a muezzin sing Quranic verses over one. Anything that can be used to spread the word of Islam is holy in Saudi Arabia.

On a sidenote Turkish soaps are a big thing in the Arab world (including Saudi Arabia). From what I've heard they're not really that different from the Bold and the Beautiful and other American soaps. No matter where there's always an audience for the corny stuff.

I've seen a few, they are getting fairly popular here as well. They aren't as bad as some of the Latin American mass-produced waste of time that came before them (from the few episodes of "Pearl" and a few others that I've sat through during dinner), and yes, they aren't all that different from other soap operas you can get elsewhere. At the end of it all, the issues that the plot revolves around - family affairs, love, etc - are pretty much universal. The way they are portrayed might be closer to what the viewers in the Arabic countries are used to than, say, the world of business in As the world turns or Dallas, but the overall plot isn't that much different.

I think they would probably have to be somewhat censored so as not to pollute the pure morality of the Saudi Arabian people, however - the people in them do not behave like Saudis are apparently supposed to, I can tell you that much.
