I left Jan in Spellhold when I meet Imoen, and the only option in conversation was "wait right here ..." or something. I am now in Underdark, but once out, I will find Jan again or he is lost for ever?

He is lost forever. I think the game makers didn't do that right because you can't get that character back. I usually take someone who is worth dumping.

Is he? Never played with Jan, but don't he just go to his home in the Slum District?

Well, possibly it is because of a travelling problem ... *YOU*, as a superhero, needed the assistance of the shadowthieves even to get into brynnlaw, so in my eyes it isn't that surprising that poor Jan has to stay there ...

I solve this problem by taking Yoshimo in my party ;)

There is another way around it too. If you choose to leave Imoen she will return to the Copper Coronet on her own (though you get grief from the other NPCs).

I also seem to remember that it made a difference (maybe only to the amount of grief - can't remember). If you leave a charcater (say Jan) to let the initial dialogue finish but then go back to him and rearrange your party again. I'm pretty sure I did this and dumped Imoen at the second attempt. That way she went back to the Coronet and I didn't get grief from anyone. Possibley (can't remember) other characters will make it back home if you use this second rearrange option.
