I'm thinking of doing something different in my next game. Normally I'm rather mercinary about collecting loot and selling it to stores. This time, I'm thinking of doing something differnet. Instead, I'm going to try to use the stores as little as possible. I'll aquire items pretty much only by taking them from my enemies. I'm thinking the best class for roleplay reasons for this is either a Paladin (the rules on wealth in P&P) or a Druid (avoids cities and unnatural stuff). A Ranger seems to be acceptable as well.

What NPCs would in your opinion be most willing to go along with this low-funds idea? My current idea is to take
    Adjantis
Paladin, not allowed to accmulate wealth

    Faldorn
Doesn't like civilizations, wouldn't accmulate material wealth either.

    Kivan
    Only interested in killing bandits

    Alora
Says wealth was never her primary concern

    Minsc
"A hero needs no profit. A sword is just a few coins; armor is only a few more. No, it is evil that needs gold to fund their machinations, not heroes"

    Dynaheir
    Goes where Minsc goes.

The trouble is, most of these are NPCs that I don't get until the middle or end of the game. Any suggestions on people I can take in the intern? I'm thinking Imoen for a thief, but she did steal that wand. Safana and Coran are out as they are both profiteers, and Imoen did say she'd stick with me. IF I go the Paladin route, I probably can't pick any evil characters either, but I'm not going to hold myself to that.

What about Branwen? Powergaming wise, she's probably a better choice than Faldorn, but I'm not powergaming this time. However, I can't get Faldorn until after the bandit camp, so Branwan would probably serve me well in the intern.

I'm open to suggestions on who else I can use.

On the whole, Jaheira and Khalid didn't strike me as particularly interested in coin, Jaheira especially as she is also a druid.

Xan is reasonably early. Really, he isn't likely to be interested in wealth- if he believes it would serve any purpose, that purpose would be to drag out the inevitable.

If you are really serious about not having too much wealth, might I suggest using a paladin as your PC and donating money to a church every time you go into a settlement with one (even if doing so will not increase your reputation)? If you go for a percentage of your party's wealth, say 10%, it is fairly easy to work out.

As an alternative, it is not all that easy to imagine a paladin looting a corpse for a couple of coins, so you could try to get by through only searching bodies if they are either important to the story or if your characters know they would have something the party needs.

Don't know if that's acceptable for you but if you play with Tutu/BGT then both, SCS1 and Tweakpack offer an option to make the Cha4 and later NPCs accessible from the beginning , either by moving them to Cha2 locations or by making the Cloakwood areas accessible earlier.
