after reading harbourboy and co's adventures, i decided to give IWD2 another try...i always gave up on playing it since there were tons of issues with choppiness and general crashing on my computer. however, thanks to a burning desire to experience the game due to the IWD2 rp stories on the boards and the iwd2 technical faq here on the forums, i finally worked up the determination and researched and fixed all my problems. :D

apparently, all i needed to do was update the VIA drivers for my computer...while i keep my graphics card drivers and such regularly updated, i'm a big enough computer idiot to forget to check if my motherboard was nice and happy. unfortunately, the strange issue of the cursor "flickering" is still present, but that in no way makes the game unplayable to me...merely annoying, but i'm just so happy that the rest of the crash/chop/lag issues are gone. yay! now i can finally turn my noble and brave party of adventurers into "reality." :)

just a quick question...is heart of fury mode for iwd2 feasible with a new party? or does it absolutely require a high level party with "uberitems" and such and class builds that are sort of "gimmicky" (pure def tanks with nukers behind)? do you basically need the best items from a normal or insane playthrough to even survive in HoF targos?

i'd love to play HoF mode with the cool updated items, but i'd rather stick to my favorite class and party builds rather than some crazy 3 class multiclass tank gnome or something. ty!

Oh HOF for a new party is possible alright. sadistic, but possible. What you'll end up doing is summoning 95% of the time to stay alive though (since summons get the same HOF boosts as their monster equivilants).

HoF for a new party is a bit silly. Much more fun to use your level 17 party exported from the end of normal mode to experience the uber items and high level spells etc.

HoF with a new party is a bit pointless unless you are trying to prove something to yourself or someone else. Possible, but you will spend most of your time summoning and running away.

You don't need to have a super-specialised party to take it on, just use the onhe that you completed the game with. The ones you have in mind are from guides that merely advise the 'easiest' way to complete HoF- they are by no means necessary.

VIA and SiS makes the worst chipsets you can find on the market... almost as bad as AsRock motherboards (rebranded Asus). But this ain't a comp thread.

Anyway, beat the game first before attempting HoF, and attempt it with your exported party. A new party in HoF will leave you banging your head on the wall. (random factoid: banging your head on the wall burns up 150 calories per hour)

thanks guys, i'll keep all that in mind.

finally, would even a high level party without the aforementioned "ubertanks" (aka a "normal" party) need to summon and run away in HoF? or could they at least make a good show of duking it out with the mobs without tossing the odd arrow or stone from behind a wall of summons?

not that i have anything against it really, but if that is the case, i'll probably just play the game on insane mode and deal with the loss of the HoF unique items.

    ty!

I play HoF with the party that I used to beat the game, but I dont think HoF is much fun. I played Targos and the Bridge and im almost at the ice temple and It hasnt been any trouble sofar. The only thing is that the fights take longer cuz monsters have more hp, which make it silly. I mean a goblin that can take more damage than the monsters in the end of the game looks silly, imho. So I restarted with a new party of 2 sofar :) Making a Harbourboy style party this time. 1 Cleric and 1 wizard sofar. Tons of fun. Thanks for the idea Harbour.

@ Infinitely True: You can fight it out with the creatures without having to hide (although summons are still highly advised). Bear in mind that you will need a lot of healing though. My opinion of HoF is similar to that of deerslayer's: it just seems to have a lot less point to it when I could be starting a new game and having an experience with different characters.

I'll respectfully disagree. HoF mode plays much like a different game, as you have to use all new tactics to stand a chance. 1 normal + 1 HoF mode (with same characters) definitely gives better replay value than 2 normal mode games with different characters, at least for me.

The one problem with HoF mode is that although they require new tactics, you often end up using the same tactics over and over again, which does get repetitive. As detailed in that 'Solo Fun' thread, I'm trying to beat HoF without using any summon creatures at all in an effort to change it up, as I used summons a lot when I went through HoF with a full party. It's definitely been a frantic adventure!

No worries. I probably got the idea from here somewhere anyway.

HoF mode is an interesting diversion and a way of experiencing high level characters and using some interesting high powered magic items. But it isn't as good as normal mode, simply because less effort has gone into balancing the game properly for high level characters.

    @InfinitelyTrue:
I´ve tried the "no summon" tactics, and it works for me,but I have a 6 people party,so I think a solo game would be WAY harder because the whole horde aim at you all the time.
A good idea is something that break the enemie´s line,or controling them, or stop them or kill them instantly.
I´ve suffered trough HoF mode but nothing impossible croos my way till the severed hand.
Like I said, my game was 6 people, but with that experience, I´m gonna try a 4,3 people and then solo party (normal and Hof) and then I will have a very good conclussion.

Yeah, I definitely agree with Lord Fox. High level instant-kill or incapacitation spells are the ticket.

Things like Wail of the Banshee, Holy Word, Tremor, Mass Dominate, and Symbol of Hopelessness (though I could never find the scroll, and instead am using the sling that gives the spell power).

Lower level spells like Chaos can sometimes work as well, but it's a bit tougher since it has a lower Difficulty Class (level 5 vs. 8-9). Malison of course works wonders with all these spells.

Enemies get a -4 penalty when saving against the chaos spell, so the overall difficulty class to save against this spell should be the same as against level9 spells.
Since most HoF enemies have a better con save than will save chaos should even succeed more often than WoB.

Heh true enough, forgot about the -4 modifier. I guess what I said applies more to spells like Disintegrate and Hold Monster and such.
