[IMG] Lately there have been many provoking topics posted here in Whatnots, and while such topics are fine as far as I'm concerned, the behaviour of some people posting in them is not.

    1. Verbal Insults. Be it known here and now that from this moment on, anyone spotted by the moderators to call anyone here on the boards either a moron, idiot, loser, or whatever other insult, will be warned once, and if seen doing it again, banned. There will be no mercy regarding this. I don't care what your personal opinion of someone is. If you have to let someone know that you can't contain your bile any longer, send them a private message, where they can either choose to argue with you or put you on the ignore list. Do NOT do it in any of the threads.

From the Forum Rules list which all of you should have read upon registering:

Criticize and discuss to your heart's content, but do it constructively. No attacks, insults, or flames - be it on someone's person, religious beliefs, race, national background or whatever. This is one of our most important rules. If you have a problem with somebody, do not flame them on our boards. Take it somewhere else. No flaming of ANY kind is welcome here. The quickest way to get banned from our boards is to break this rule.

    2. Swearing. We have kids reading these boards. And while some kids trying to play adults want to show off their ever-expanding knowledge of profanity, this will not be tolerated here. Last week I started filling out the auto-censor list, for the first time in the history of our boards. I actually thought that it would help, but it only took about a day or so for people to start spacing out swear words or masking them so that the auto-censor wouldn't pick them up. This makes me really, really mad, and I'll take it as a personal insult if I see someone doing it again. You are not allowed to swear excessively in ANY way or form, masked or not. An occasional "damn", "crap" etc. are ok, even I use them sometimes. But seing people use "f*ck" and "as*hole" and similar in practically every post is way over the tolerance limit. And no, emotional envolvement does not give you the right to swear all throughout a certain thread either.

This is the updated rule from the list:

No excessive swearing. We try to keep Boards O' Magick as clean as possible. If you want to swear, go somewhere else. Automatic censoring will pick up the most offensive swear words and replace them with asterisks. You, however, are not allowed to space out swear words, replace one character in a swear word with an asterisk, or use any alternative spelling to avoid the auto-censor.

    "No personal or racial insults"

Why, exactly, do you single out race? It's just another personal characteristic, and not one that should be singled out for special preference. I know you're just shooting down some loudmouths here, but this is a common tendency that annoys me.

I, for one, am a honkie. Anyone wishing to make cracker jokes is welcome. I also suggest lots of sheep jokes, as my ancestry is primarily Scotch-Irish. Throw in some Nazi humor because of my grandmother's German side. Oh, and you can call me a porch monkey too, because (rumor has it) there's black blood in the family too. There's no Italian in my background, so WOP jokes are out, but I do hear that there could be some French back there too, so feel free to call me a frog.

Was there a point to that or are you just bored? Race was added extra since someone insulted that lately. But you're right, I'll also add religion in so that the list will be complete. If you have anything else that needs to be added to that rule, feel free to let me know.

Eye color, hair color, height, weight, number of toes...

They're all just personal characteristics. There's no reason to privelege race as something that can't be mentioned or joked about.

(Religion is different, as it's something one has voluntarily rather than genetically.)

[IMG] You didn't get it. Try now, I rewrote it so that it goes from the smallest to the biggest. The only reason it is spelled out is because race and religion often get insulted. "Eye color, hair color, height, weight, number of toes..." do not. Not unless that's a new trend in USA that I'm not aware of yet.

Does this also apply to people's beliefs in certain areas that are not exactly, what is considered to be the norm by most people?

For example my 'Real Magic' topic that i requested clothes due to a late number of 'silly' posts?

Hmm, wasn't aware that putting just one astricks (sp) wasn't allowed. Maybe you should add that one to the FAQ, as it is tollerated everywhere else and people (after this post is dead and burried) may not realise.

Me thinks it a good plan.

Yes, yes - I know I've done similar in the past, but recently things have escalated a bit. I think your list is complete and to the point. :thumb: ;)

Schralp, you just plain crack me up. :)

Other than that, I haven't really noticed the swearing or personal attacks. It may be I just don't read with enough "feeling", or I don't make it to the boards until after the sweepers have gone through.

Probably the latter. I really like the posts that BTA edits, and makes no [comment] that he's been through except for the standard [edited by]; just a little touch up and out.

Sorry, I just really had to put this link up for all those that might not have ever seen it before:

    old thread
As soon as I saw ejsmith's comment about BTA's commenting style, this was all I could think of. Probably the best all time moderating I've ever seen. It might take you a while to figure it all out.

(Yes, I know it's off topic, but I just couldn't resist - besides, why deprive those who might not have seen it before?)

Thank you Tal. I for one was also getting sick of the profanity and childish antics going on in some of the threads. Hopefully people will read this and begin making more appropriate posts.

    Once again, thank you.

[IMG] One of the strongest beliefs I have is crystallized by this quote:

"Rudeness is the weak man's imitation of strength"

I can always call myself a moron, in fact, I often do. I allow myself to laugh and learn from my mistakes and incapacities.

But when words are written with anger and venom, it becomes destructive. SP has always struck me as a place where we can agree to disagree in constructive manner.

Opinions will always differ. That the way it is, and honestly, that's the way I like it. It validates everyone's individuality. If two people agree on everything, then one of them is not essential.

But disagreeing can be done in a civil, constructive way. Belittling defeats the purpose of argument. What it does is closes the mind of the person you're trying to reach. In the end, it is the fool who tries to reason with an uncrossable chasm, and an even bigger fool is he if he created it by destroying the bridge.

Not everything on these boards are "serious stuff". But in those topics where serious discussion is needed, please exhibit it. "Wise men speak because they have something to say. Fools, because they have to say something."

This shouldn't have happened. Race and religion were topics that were once beautifully discussed, argued and defended in these boards. Even if emotions did occassionaly spill over, most would handle the situation in a classy way. I haven't been visiting as often, and I am in the dark as to what really gave birth to this post by Tal. So I am saddened, that painful words and choice insults by a few has deprived SP of what potentially could have been intelligent, insightful and hopefuly eye-opening discussion.

Attack the issue, not the person. And when I say attack I don't mean flame. I mean analyze, dissect and discuss it in an honest and civil manner. One can deal with delicate issues without assaulting another's personhood. If your purpose is to try to change a person's view, do it with consideration and compassion, and you will see that whether he agreed with you or not, in the end, you indeed changed him. How? He will realize that through your efforts, you have been sensitive to him and his values. At the very least he will hopefully become more open and more considerate because somehow, you have rubbed off on him.

Please folks, this is our community. We don't have to agree with each other all the time, but let's be considerate. I'm sure you didn't register on SP with the impression that everyone here will agree and bend to your views. Let's use this to learn and draw strength from each other's differences. What's the use in constantly hearing and trying to learn something you already know?

Remember: We all want to be heard and acknowledged. It can be done, only if we are human enough to hear and acknowledge other people too.
