    Which side did you pick, the vampires or the Shadow Thieves? There was a previous discussion at http://www.sorcerers.net/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000524.html which said that if you pick the Shadow Thieves, then attack them, Arkanis Gath is pretty much invincible, doing huge amounts of damage and being able to take a lot as well. So if you've joined the Shadow Thieves and are attacking them, you've triggered this invincible opponent.
    Alternatively, if you've picked the vampires, have you just been backstabbed? If the thieves have a good enough damage multiplier, and your characters don't have many hitpoints, that could kill you in one blow.
