Thoughts, opinions? I've just come to the conclusion that its benefits overweigh those from dual-wielding or sword and shield and are more or less comparable to those of the two-handed style.

Probably I will go for dual-wielding late in ToB to wield Purifier or the-superb-hammer-whose-name-I-don't-remember and Angurvadal (str 22), which would require several proficiency slots, or two-handed style and two-handed sword for Carsomyr (when it scores criticals twice as often and swings with 1 delay it's pretty awesome) anyway, but I still think that one-handed is a good choice for base day by day adventuring (well, excluding thieves for whom it's an obvious choice).

I honestly don't have much experience with it, besides using it with theives. With fighters and clerics, I always took the attitude that I have two hands, so why not use them? I can't ever remember using only one, single handed weapon, without having a second weapon or shield in the other hand. Does your AC keep going down with additional proficiencies spent? And how many total proficiencies can you have? Two like two handed weapon style or three like two weapon style?

Well if you're referring to the hammer I think you are (Crom Fayr), it'll give you a strength of 25, thereby degating Angurvadal's bonus. But if you're talking about Runehammer, good call. :)

As to Single Weapon Style, I totally overlooked it the first few times I played, but I now see how valuable it is. Especially if you want to use both a missile weapon (like a bow) and a high-damage single-handed weapon (like a Katana). This is great for fighter/thieves or even single classes. I found this especially useful for Valygar and his Katana slingin' ways.

If you read the description of any of those fighting-style proficiencies, they give you an idea how many points can be spent on them. IIRC, a fighter (including multi- and dual-classes) can spend up to 3 points on two-weapon fighting and up to 2 points on the other styles. I believe that all other classes can only spend 1 point in any of these proficiencies.

Only dual-wielding is 3 points and that's for fighters, fighter multiclass, rangers, barbarians and paladins. The classes that only get one slot for weapons don't get more than that for styles.

My character is a paladin, so I think the Cavallier bonuses (fear immunity, poison immunity, some lesser bonuses/immunities) are better than firing arrows although I miss that.

One-weapon style gives +1 ac and criticals on 19-20 instead of the regular 20 first time chosen and the second slot spent grants another +1 ac.
