I think programs that are (at least partially) open source will eventually, but ineveitably, be more popular than their closed-sourced equivalents.

(Before someone brings up Linux vs Windows, let me say that I don't consider those equivalent programs.)

The question I have is: What does open sourcing do to the marketplace? If a company has to open source to compete, they lose a huge amount of profit. So does that cut down on the quality of the programs we get because software companies will have to make tons of open source programs instead of riding out their closed sourced ones? I dunno. Interested in hearings opinions from SPers.
