[IMG] I've been reading a few reviews for 'Return of the King' today, and the consensus is: Peter Jackson should get an oscar for his masterpiece of the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy.

    What do you think?

So far the critical review has been OVERWHELMING to the positive. Even two reviewers who gave bad reviews to FotR and TTT have weighed in with good reviews on RotK. It currently is 100% good on Rotten Tomatoes, and it appears to be the front runner for Best Picture and Best Director, even some scuttle about Best Supporting for Sean Astin, Andy Serkis and Miranda Otto.

That being the case, remember that Academy voters view themselves as artists , and there is an undercurrent in Hollywood to snub LotR due to it's massive commercial success, and go with some other film like Mystic River (a great film) or Cold Mountain (a piece of crap).

For a good run-down on the Oscar race, check out Here .

If I had a vote, I would definitely go with Jackson and RotK, unfortunately the Academy stripped me of my membership after they found that I was involved in "Pee Wee's Big Adventure".

[IMG] If Andy Serkis doesn't get best supporting actor for Gollum, the Oscar's are a rigged piece o' crap and the SAC shouldn't be allowed to vote on the winners anymore!!!

And PJ better get best director, or the next time I run into the Oscar giving committee, I will bust heads!!! And I mean that in the nicest possible way!

Personally, I think Return of the King will win the Oscar. The general consensus over the last two years was that Fellowship and Two Towers were not going to win the Oscar and Return of the King would win on the basis of the entire trilogy, and that was long before anyone began talking about how much better Return of the King is compared to the first two.

Also, I really don't think that this year has a particularly strong field of Oscar contenders. The article that Hacken Slash posted a link to lists many films but until they were mentioned as such I wouldn't have said say that any of them would have struck me as being Oscar contenders.

That's what I've been thinking the last two acadamy awards shows, if we are wrong I'd be really pissed and will never watch that show again.

Well, it certainly deserves an Oscar. The argument of it winning on the basis of the entire trilogy holds well to me because I heard one of the 'commentators' on the Oscars from this year say that a lot of the awards are given on the basis of bosy of work rather than one particular film. Here's hoping.

Down in little NZ we've always viewed the Oscars as being rigged. Best actress (holy crap was 'this' one rigged!) and best actor last year were 'both' african-americans despite Russel Crowe doing a 'brilliant' job in A Beautiful Mind.

PJ deserves an Oscar for best director and for best film. I think he should also be awarded a 'special' Oscar for simply doing the damn movies, taking possibly the biggest risk in cinema history using (arguably) the 2nd most famous book in the world (2nd to the bible probably, at least from a western P.O.V).

Compare it to the Matrix trilogy, each movie after the other - despite the more impressive special effects - was worse than the one before. PJ has done the exact opposite (from what I've heard about RotK).

Wait a minute...have you actually watched Denzel in "Training Day"?

He absolutely rocks. He deserved the award, and the part he played in the film was awesome. Russel Crowe has been lame since "The Insiders"

"Gladiator"...please, Ridley make a sequel to "Alien" of "Blade Runner" or anything else that was worth celluloid.

EDIT: I don't dispute your knock on "Best Actress", however. American's just love to find ways to compensate for past injustice.

The rumors I've read and heard all point to the LotR cast and crew all getting a ton of awards for this one film, to make up for the lack of awards the films have won the past few years.

    I hope I'm hearing right...

I think that the film will see Best Pic, Best Dir, but I see little hope of anyone in it being nominated as best Actor or Actress. It could pick up one or two nods for Supporting...and of course the whole slew of Cinematography, Adaptation, Costume, Make-up, Visual effects, Original Score...

Looks like Vegas is even getting on the RotK bandwagon.

I've just watched the extended version of TTT for the second time now and my belief is even more sustained that PJ should get an oscar, and RotK should definately get best picture, if they say it's even better than the first two. However is it just me or do other people think that PJ took to many liberaties in the film. I've read the books and think he just manipulated the plot a little to suit him. TTT SPOILER AHEAD:

Look at the battle of Helm's Deep. Why did PJ include the elves in that battle when it simply didn't happen in the book? That baffles me.
    END OF SPOILER

So what do you guys think?

I hope he wins. New Zealand needs to win *something* this year.

*crosses fingers* Oh, I so do hope he does...

As for WElves in Helm's deep? Simple, really. They had to show somehow that hey, Elves are taking part in this, and glimpses of the battles Thranduil and Celeborn lead against the nasties of Dol Guldur would've been too... hazy... to the general audience.
