I spoke to Nathaniel, gave him his ring and chose not to give him the airship components then went off to Oswald to get some items. I then returned to the Ice Temple and entered into the dialogue with the Luskan troops. When I left the Ice Temple Oswald had flown off and I still had the items?

Did I lose out on a whole load of experience points? Will I ever need these items again? If that's the case I might just give up - this game is so badly designed compared to the other IE games.

IIRC you do get some XP for giving him the items but it's not game changing

Most of those items don't have much other use, although there are some merchants who will pay a fortune for a diamond.

What's the point of holding on to those items for so long? They just clog up the inventory. I'm surprised you weren't forced to return before completing the Ice Temple, simply to unload loot.
I'm assuming you can't reload an old save. All I can say is, this is unfortunate. That's why it's wise to keep multiple saves, in case you need to redo the story. It happens frequently, if you discover you made wrong choices. This is no different. You took too long to help Oswald fix his airship, so he did it himself and flew off. It's hardly a design flaw.

I encountered the same problem, I also deliberately withheld the items because I did NOT want him to fly off until I was done with him and his crafting and his store.
