I want to give my player something different this time then gold piece and come gems... do you know of something?

If you wonder, the player will be First level, maybe 2 if their lucky when they will get the end and their goal. Since nobody or almost noboby played D&D before I'll go with a classical quest: They begin in a litle town and seek and adventure, if they play their "role" right they, maybe, will heard of that old castel full of monster, puzzle, adventure and treasure to find. A litle classical, but For the first time it's always fun, It will have Moderate Role play Hack 'n slashery and Puzzle, but my main question isn't about the quest but the "treasure"

Really minor magic items (potions, scrolls, little trinkets that give a +2 or something to a certain check) can work. So do art objects. Or rare stuff that might be used in spells, like unicorn hair or vampire teeth. You get the idea.

Valuable furnishings. Golden weapons and armor (worse than normal version, but much more valuable). Spell scribing supplies for wizards. Rare or exotic spices, herbs, food and wine. Fine clothes. Special cards, chess game or dice. Rare books and tomes containing some important information.

There are thousands of possibilities. Some common items come precious, if they have something special.

Give them some type of art. Maybe a small statue or something that seems completly worthless until they stumble on the right person.
Or maybe something for pure entertainment value. As a reward for destroying the forces of evil they get transported into an interplanar pub or something.

Ekhm, when they reach level 3 or 4 you could knight the warrior pool ones and even rogues if they prove worthy.

Following up on what Chevalier said, also admittance to a Prestige Class, if of appropriate level.

Its just an idea, but give them a lot of goods like flour, or vegatables, or something, and they can barter with it, though I don't really know what for. Just a thought.

Give them some land or a house. Or if they're high enough level a keep or stronghold.
Or just for kicks, a UFO :)

[IMG] Ha ha ha! Turnip trade. You sound like Jan Jansen now, as Ucle Spanky used to say.

"Jan Jansen at your service" "Beware! Your knees are mine!" "Prepare to meet your doom"

Anyway, a magical weapon +1 or a masterwork weapon/armor sound fine to me. If there is a town nearby you can give them gold so that thay can buy equipment. If the players are evil you can give them some slaves. :D
Or they could find a key or map that leads to their next adventure.

My first thought was to give them some jewelry. When they try to sell it, you could tie that into the beginning of the next adventure. I.E. - the jewelry is a well-known family heirloom, or recently stolen, etc...

What about additional free non-weapon proficiency, secondary skill or feat (whatever 'ED' you're using), the more non-standard the better?

For example an Inquisitive sorceress tampering with things could get a fine new look with a pale skin and violet hair that won't get dyed...

A ranger could be given an elven name... A dwarven or half-orc one for a berserker, barbarian or just brutish fighter?

That devoted paladin of yours could receive a small laying hands amount bonus as the sign of that the deity is pleased with his service.

In 2E an LG human with too low stats to be a pally, or a non-human Mazzy style could get his first paladin-like power, let it even be just one detect evil per day.

For a priest perhaps a free first level slot or a minor dice bonus in low amount healing?

After he's done something really impressive for such a low-level one, your player's character could meat an official of his country, the liege lord of his family or even a hero of his class. Imagine how Johnny the Squire meets his idol, Sir Big'un... or your rookie bard lassie recognises chevalier in the knight passing by ;)
